- PRESS RELEASE
The forthcoming World Economic Forum Round Table in Doha will be the launch pad for the second Arab World Competitiveness Report 2005, which will outline issues of economic growth and regional competition.
The Round Table in Doha between April 1-2, 2005 is being hosted by Qatar Airways, which has entered into a strategic partnership with the World Economic Forum. The agreement also covers a second Round Table to be held again in the Qatari capital in Spring 2007.
More than 200 global leaders from business, government, academia, society and the media will share their insights on commercial, political and economic developments in the region at the event next month.
The first edition of the Arab World Competitiveness Report in 2003 helped create awareness among Arab business leaders and government officials of the need to enhance competitiveness in the region to foster economic growth and create jobs.
There is growing consensus among prominent leaders in the Arab world that ambitious and sustained economic and political reforms are the only way to boost the region's growth performance.
Two years after the first edition of the Report, the question is no longer whether Arab governments should implement economic reforms to enhance competitiveness, but how best can this be done. The Arab World Competitiveness Report 2005 will attempt to provide the answers to this pressing question.
The report will also highlight the fact that political differences within the region could stifle economic growth.
The findings will be disclosed to the select group of delegates and discussed with the authors, political leaders and members of the World Economic Forum during the Arab Competitiveness Round Table.
Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker expressed delight at being able to support such a high-profile event that will be attended by distinguished figures in Arabic public, political and business life.
"The Arab World Competitiveness Report will provide a crucial insight into the reality of doing business in our region today," said Al Baker.
"National economies thrive on successful business and for corporate Arabia to flourish, we need to utilise resources to the maximum to compete and cooperate.
"Trade is the lifeline for any economy and as the Middle East has emerged into a powerful economic trading region, it is vital for business and political leaders to share their thoughts on how we can remain competitive and enhance our global competitiveness."
Delegates at the Round Table will examine the business, political and social implications of the region's growth, looking at the impact of the wealth of natural resources on regional economies and the impact on trade of emerging nations such as China.
Qatar Airways' strategic partnership ensures the airline's participation in future global events organised by the World Economic Forum.
