DCCI holds a seminar on the Commercial Agencies under the WTO Agreements

Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) organized a seminar entitled 'Commercial Agencies under the WTO agreements', Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at the Conference Hall in the DCCI headquarters with more than 200 attendees.

The Business Policy & Legal Services Department held the event being part of the chamber's effort in supporting and serving the business community in Dubai & DCCI members and convoying the changes and developments in the economic conditions.

Mr. Abdulrahman G. Al Mutaiwee Director General of Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) gave the opening speech showcasing the importance of this seminar in this period while the UAE is on the way to sign free trade agreements in the near future with foreign countries.

The seminar discussed the current situation of commercial agencies in the light of the global advancements, as well as the continuous arguing to adopt the open door economy and free market.

Dr. El Hassan Jouaouine Chief Technical advisor on WTO affairs made a presentation focusing on three major topics namely UAE's commitments in WTO, UAE agency law & WTO rules and WTO disciplines & Automobile sector.

Mr. Hisham Al Shirawi member of the board and the President of electronics business group that works under the umbrella of DCCI made presentation on "Under WTO Consumer Electronic Industry & Commercial Agency Law. He explained the agency's role in manufacturing, distributing and marketing the product through regional offices and local distributors and the importance of agencies law, the Economic Ministry & government department's role in this issue.

Mr. Al Shirawi highlighted the negative points that might have impact on the UAE market in case of opining it by having multi-importers. This will have impact on the reputation of the UAE and will affect the consumers in several issues. He suggested some recommendations like having some changes in the trade roles and finding new low articles in agencies contract.

The second part of the seminar consisted of two papers. The first paper was on Commercial Agencies in UAE according to the WTO agreement presented by Mr. C. Chakradaran and the second paper was bout extent of compatibility of the commercial agencies law in UAE with the agreement of GATT 94 delivered by Mr. Ali Aidarous Al Aidarous International legal practice.
