Bentley Continental GT

After years of churning out 'fast trucks' in the form of the Arnage R and T twins, Bentley took a leaf out of its fabulous history and the result was the Continental GT - the British marque's first two-door, four-seater coupe in a very long time.

It was but natural for Bentley to call this new exciting GT the Continental as it echoed the fabulous coupe version of the Bentley R-Type, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. Back in time, the R-Type Continental was the fastest four-seat production coupe in the world and now it is the turn of the Continental GT to lay claim to this fact.

So how fast does the Continental GT go? According to Bentley, the top speed of this car is in excess of 180 mph. We did not try to reach such a velocity but suffice to say, we did do some serious speeds in a secure environment (not on the roads of Dubai) where we could give the GT its head and let it loose.

With the 6-litre W12 nestling under the long front hood, developing over 500bhp and 650Nm of torque from its twin-turbocharged engine, the Continental showed impeccable manners when pushed hard. On the other hand, cruising within speed limits was a lark with nary a sound to disturb the tranquility of the cabin. For that matter, there was hardly a whisper of wind noise even at high speeds - this Bentley is truly cut from the same cloth as its other siblings.

It redefines the concept of Grand Tourers for an audience totally modern. To put it simply, the Continental GT coupe is the most exciting vehicle to wear that famous 'B' emblem in 70 years.

Power is transmitted to all wheels via a normal shift stick in the centre console or by steering-mounted paddles, offering a choice of full auto, semi-automatic or full manual. The gearbox is a ZF-built six-speed mounted in the rear axle for even distribution of weight.

Riding on huge 19-inch tyres wrapped around gorgeous alloy wheels, the Continental GT is a true representation of what a Grand Touring car should be. There is ample space for four occupants to relax in sublime luxury and enough luggage space for weekend getaways.

During our test run, we found that the chassis dynamics were absolutely spot on - being stiff and responsive to various road harmonics while providing a comfortable ride. Despite its weight (its no spring chicken), this car is a joy to drive. Especially, it throws around corners with virtually non-existent body roll and a superbly weighed steering that gives fantastic feedback.

Turn-in was precise and accurate and the turning radius was remarkably tight, so parking was a cinch. Any time you have a car that can build speed as effortlessly as the Continental GT does, brakes as quickly become your new best friend. The gargantuan 16.1' (410mm) vented front disc brakes hauled the hefty GT from triple digit speeds effortlessly and without drama, and provided some of the best retardation in the business.

Truly, the Continental GT is definitely unique, and it's entirely intoxicating.
