Prominent physicians and medical school professors convened this week in Dubai to set the groundwork for a constructive program of international level continuing medical education, to include an annual conference, that is expected to dramatically raise the Middle East medical community's awareness about new treatments in the area of urinary incontinence, or overactive bladder, a condition which is believed to affect one in three men and half of all women in the Middle East, according to physicians with the newly-formed Pan-Arab Continence Society (PACS).

The Second Pan-Arab Continence Society Congress is set to take place in Dubai in December 2005, with more than 180 physicians from across the region expected to be in attendance.

"Millions of Arabs suffer from some degree of overactive bladder, but they 'suffer in silence' and fail to seek medical treatment for their condition," said Professor M. Sherif Mourad, M.D., President of PACS, and chief organizer of the groups.

"The goal of PACS, therefore, is to raise the level of awareness about suitable medical treatments, and this awareness must begin with doctors before it can be fully and effectively communicated to patients," added Mourad.

Members of the PACS' board of directors met recently in Dubai to agree the annual congress' agenda and establish its scientific program. These medical doctors include: Adel Honayan of Kuwait; Ahmed El Badr of Saudi Arabia; Ayman El Qatawneh of Jordan; Awatef El Bahr and Nabil Metry of UAE; Marwan El Khani of Syria; Nimat Saigh of Iraq; and Mohamed Bolbol and Michel Jabbour of Lebanon.

PACS honorary board members include professors: Linda Cardozo and Paul Abrams of the United Kingdom; Mohamed Ghoneim of Egypt; Mostafa El Hilali of Canada; Philip Van Kerrebroeck of Netherlands; and Walter Artibani of Italy.

The International Continence Society Annual Congress will take place in Montreal in 2005, but has already been scheduled for Cairo in 2008.
