The purpose of on-the-job training is to:
• Provide the opportunity to train on-the-job in a real work environment
• Introduce National men and women to local, regional and international work practices and environments
• Give them the opportunity to apply off-the-job training and previously acquired knowledge and skills to career preparation and work
• Create a smooth transition from training institute/college/university/home to work
• Help individuals make informed career choices
• Provide employers with an opportunity to try and test potential full - time employees
• Provide trainees with an opportunity to consolidate and enhance skills learned in training centre/college/university
• Provide feedback on the effectiveness of the training delivered and the appropriateness of the content
There are three model of OJT and the suitability of each one depends on the nature of the programme, its duration, goals, employment sector and available resources:
1. Block release at the end of the training intervention.
2. Sandwich training and development programmes - these consist of a period of intensive of-the-job training, a period of work experience, and a final off-the-job period towards the end of the programme.
3. Day Release, one, two or more days on-the-job training per week throughout the duration of the programme.
Each on-the-job model has its own merits and weaknesses but they all serve the same purpose of providing the trainees with the opportunity to 'practise and learn by doing'.
'If all I do is hear, I will forget
If I hear and see, I will remember
If I hear, see and do, I will understand'.

All competency based training programmes designed for UAE Nationals in preparation for entry into the workforce must contain an on-the-job training period that will expose trainees to the rigours of real work.
