With its developing range of study areas in Business, Information Technology and Mass Communication, the University of Southern Queensland in Dubai (USQ in Dubai) found that a more extensive preparation for their candidates especially in written English is needed. This can be achieved best through a separate unit dealing exclusively with English Language. The School will be assigned the mission of strengthening English Language Skills in students and professionals to be able to take on academic studies in USQ Dubai and overseas. It will also play a leading role in training individuals and corporations in both English for Academic Purposes and Business English.

The increase in the use of English language is evident in most activities of everyday life in the UAE. The School will be of great value to the UAE nationals who are keen on strengthening international relations and to the expatriates who want to cope with their job requirements.

'We see that a School for English Language Studies is integral to the development of basic academic competencies for international students. It is especially important for building self-confidence in students in the UAE for them to have good English communication skills', said Professor Rod Gerber, the Chief Academic Officer at USQ in Dubai.

The School for English Language Studies is another advancement in the development of this youthful campus in Dubai. We have to remember that USQ in Dubai commenced operations only towards the last quarter of 2004.

Dr. Simon Malele Ma Ludani, Head of Foundation Studies at USQD and a PhD in Linguistics & English Language Teaching from the University of Wales, UK, with extensive experience in teaching has played a key role in developing the program to suit the local requirements. With its updated program customised from the USQ ELICOS program, the School will add to the strong Foundation Program already operating. In other words, it will provide a blend between University Entrance and English for Academic Purposes with the aim of improving students' competency in English. It will focus Communication Skills or areas of English competences i.e. Listening, Speaking, Writing and Reading. Specialised additions will be made to the program portfolio in months to come.

The School was inaugurated on 19 April 2005, at the USQ Dubai premises by Dr. Bob Wicks, Director, Undergraduate Studies, Faculty of Business, University of Southern Queensland along with Ms. Debby Dunne Admissions Manager Student Administration, University of Southern Queensland, Australia.
