Among the physicians in attendance will be a number of leading specialists in rheumatology from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. Rheumatoid arthritis is a major health challenge across the region, and causes joints to stiffen and swell, leaving patients in pain and unable to perform everyday tasks, and in some cases leading to severe disability.
The meeting, which is supported by the UAE Rheumatology Club, will be addressed by Gabriele Brieden, who suffers from RA and was at one time totally debilitated by the condition, but who has recovered sufficiently to lead an active and mobile lifestyle.
'I was part of a very early clinical trial for an innovative biologic treatment that was developed to offer relief from rheumatoid arthritis. Prior to this treatment, my life was hugely impacted by the chronic condition, to the point where movement was painful and extremely difficult,' said Brieden.
Following her treatment with the innovative human monoclonal antibody - which at that time was in the test phase, and which has since been approved for use in the Middle East - Brieden was much better able to manage the symptoms of RA, and was able to walk and perform standard activities much more easily. She has since become active in the campaign to help sufferers from RA.
'Since my treatment, I've become much more active, and have tried to play my part in helping sufferers to combat this condition. Part of my purpose in meeting with doctors and patients, and share my experiences of how support groups can make a major contribution to improving the lives of RA sufferers.'
Among the other speakers at the event will be Professor Paul Tak, director of clinical immunology and rheumatology at Academic Medical Center, University of Amsterdam, and medical director of Dubai Bone and Joint Center.
The seriousness of rheumatoid arthritis is often underestimated, and the disease is mistakenly only associated with the very old, but in fact it is a chronic condition that can shorten people's lives by the same amount as strokes and heart disease. Because it causes significant discomfort, sufferers often fall into an inactive lifestyle, making them weaker, less flexible and less fit.
Physicians from across Middle East gather to tackle rheumatoid arthritis
Doctors from across the region will gather in Abu Dhabi this week to discuss new therapies and strategies for treating rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a debilitating and incurable condition that afflicts one in 100 people in the Middle East.
