District cooling, a way forward
- United Arab Emirates: Monday, May 16 - 2005 at 14:04
- PRESS RELEASE
District cooling systems, a new utility provision within the Gulf region which provides chilled water to buildings from a centralised chilled water production plant through a buried pipe network and metering, can reduce energy consumption, building space requirements and capital expenditure, an industry expert opened.
This represented the central theme of a seminar titled "The importance of District cooling systems with special reference to the construction businesses in a developing economy" which was held recently at the Dubai Men's College (DMC). Dr. Gareth Lucken, Regional Operations and Engineering Director, Drake & Scull International conducted the seminar.
Addressing the Final year Mechatronics students, Dr. Lucken spoke on the various cooling options, analysed the industry trends in the cooling systems as well as the costs and benefits associated with traditional cooling systems vis-à-vis district cooling schemes.
Dr. Lucken pointed out that the running cost for district cooling systems amounted to a 40% saving when compared to traditional cooling systems with plant located in every building. He added "District cooling systems when designed and installed properly have a significantly longer operating life, higher operating efficiencies and greater reliability than those more traditionally designed, built and independently maintained.
He also pointed out that environmental impact issues were better addressed by utilising district cooling systems. He mentioned some of the benefits, which included reduced CFC emissions, better noise control and most importantly reduced power consumption.
Dr. Lucken who holds a Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences is an accomplished professional and a respected industry leader who has mentored engineering professionals and advised on numerous development schemes.
