The new Centre has been opened as part of the continuous development process that has been underway since H.H Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai appointed the new Board of Directors in DOHMS. It was built under the direction of H. H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and Industry, UAE and the President of the Department of Health and Medical Services and Mr. Qasim Sultan, Chairman of DOHMS.

"Our new facility reflects our commitment to provide the highest quality of care to our patients in the region," says Mr. Qhadi Saeed Al Murooshid, Director General, DOHMS "The new Cardio-thoracic centre expands our level of service and complements the existing range of services, and will match the international standards of Cardio-thoracic intensive care.

"Uniquely, it will offer the latest cardiology and vascular procedures, treatment and care in a centralized, accessible location. Rather than travelling to distant locations, the new centre will now become the ideal choice for heart patients This Centre supports the pioneering role that Dubai Hospital has maintained in serving the society and meeting its medical requirements since it was established in 1983 on the instructions of the late Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

"We have appointed Dr Najib Al Khaja to head the centre who has vast experience and is one of the leading heart consultants in the region. Through his efforts and that of his specialist colleagues including expert surgeons and highly qualified support staff they will establish a centre for cardio-thoracic treatment of truly international standard.

Dr Saeed Jaffar, General Manager, Dubai Hospital, said: "The hospital's existing Cardiac Surgery unit was established in 1992, and the new Centre is the result of the assimilation of the hospital's high degree of specialist knowledge in the field."

Dr. Najib Al Khaja, Consultant and the Head of the Cardio-thoracic Centre said, "The Cardio-thoracic Centre is an important step towards expanding the existing range of medical services available in the region. The centre will become the ideal option for cardiac diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation services, using advanced invasive and non-invasive techniques."

The Centre has two consultant physicians, three specialists in Cardio-thoracic surgery, two Registrars and two coronary anaesthesia specialists. There are intensive coronary care units for five patients. The Centre will also offer one of the latest surgical procedures for Heart Surgery called 'Beating Heart Surgery' which involves surgeons carrying out coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG) while the heart is still beating.

The Cardiology unit at the Dubai Hospital maintained an extraordinary 97%-98% success rate in the past handling the full range of coronary complaints. The new independent centre will also handle referrals from Rashid Hospital, Al Maktoum Hospital and Al Wasl Hospital.
