In cooperation with the German Aerospace, RJ established a developed pilot assessment center in Amman

Royal Jordanian and the German Aerospace center started DLR assessment services for its pilots and for new applicants at RJ's headquarters in Amman on August 8th, 2004; it had performed this assessment in Bahrain and Hamburg, Germany, for a year and a half.

President & CEO Samer Majali was briefed by several German DLR experts on this international reliable method of pilot assessment and the benefits achieved by following this system in all fields, particularly air safety. He expressed confidence in the advantages RJ, Jordan and the region will achieve by initiating this center.

Deputy President/Chief Technical Officer Captain Fawaz Khairy reiterated that all RJ pilots working on the fleet are highly efficient, have long experience and excellent qualifications; moreover, several experienced Jordanian pilots are working for international and Arab airlines, proof that their proficiency is highly appreciated.

Khairy also stressed that RJ is constantly mindful of passenger and aircraft safety, which is enhanced by the DLR assessment services.
Arab airlines that follow this program are: Kuwait Airways, Oman Air, Gulf Air, Saudi Aramco, DHL Bahrain and Royal Jordanian.

Head of Human Resources Department Ziad Qattan said that RJ started this program 18 months ago with the aim of maintaining the efficiency of its pilots and preparing a future generation of Arab and Jordanian aviators distinguished by their technical skills.

He added that RJ, which constantly invests in its human resources, is one of the leading Arab airlines using this assessment which lasts two days and during which the candidate is examined for personality, attitude, scientific assessment, aptitude, psychomotor and psychological tests.

Qattan said that the DLR pilot assessment is used to assess RJ pilots who are second or first officers and individuals who are interested in joining flight training academies in the Kingdom. He added that RJ intends to communicate with AACO, which joins 20 Arab Airlines, sharing with them the airline's experience in assessing pilots by using the new system. RJ, he said, seeks no financial gains from the DLR system, but wants to ensure it selects the best pilots, based on quality and excellence.

Captain Walid Nazzal, head of flight operations, said that the DLR pilot assessment will benefit the airline by investing in the staff, building capacity and securing success for the pilots. At the same time, the DLR saves the applicants time, energy and the money normally spent on the flight training, which costs about JD28,000, because the probability of succeeding is significantly higher if it is decided that he/she meets all the requirements. It also spares the disappointment and frustration that come with failure.

Nazzal explained that the DLR pilot assessment is performed by several Jordanian experts in civil aviation and German experts in psychological and personal requirements needed to make a qualified and motivated pilot.
The personality and attitude assessment is designed to identify the degree of personality characteristics, such as introversion / extraversion, dominance / timidity, and stability / instability and caution/risk taking. The aptitude test (computer-based and/or paper-pencil) is to assess logical reasoning, attention control, memory function and spatial orientation, and the psychomotor test evaluates psycho-motor coordination abilities, multi-tasking capacity, stress resistance and reaction times, over and above a good level of mathematics, physics and English.
