Government of Ras Al Khaimah yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with an Indian health care group for the establishment of a world class medical college in Ras Al Khaimah at a cost of AED 100 million.

The medical college, to be set up by the Bangalore based Sagar Group, will offer courses in medicine and would award MBBS degrees which will be validated by the UAE authorities. The college will have a student intake of 100 students per batch.

The MoU was signed by Dr. Khater Massaad, Advisor to the RAK Crown Prince and CEO of the RAK Investment Authority, and Dr. D Premachandra Sagar, Vice Chairman of the Sagar Group, on the sidelines of the global investors' conference organised in RAK.

The college of Medicine is expected to start functioning by September 2006. It will offer the MBBS programme in the first phase, to be followed by lateral programmes in dentistry and nursing after six months

"We are very happy to associate ourselves with the emirate of RAK which is well endowed to become a centre of academic excellence in higher education. The emirate has the potential to create a remarkable University Town and we hope to develop the institution as a research centre in the future", said Dr. D Premachandra Sagar.

He said that the medical college will be integrated to a hospital and will have advanced teaching and allied facilities and will be backed by a highly qualified faculty.

The Sagar Group has 22 health care and educational institutions in India and caters to the needs of around 8000 students.
