Sajaa Gas safety achievement milestone

  • United Arab Emirates: Tuesday, June 07 - 2005 at 10:51
  • PRESS RELEASE

The construction of the new Sajaa Gas (SajGas) processing plant at Sajaa in Sharjah has achieved the highly prized level of one million manhours worked without any injuries or lost time incidents.

This key milestone was marked this week in a special presentation held at the site, by Mr. Salem Sahoo, General Manager of SajGas.

Presenting the commemorative plaque to the main EPCC Contractor, Petrofac International Ltd, of Sharjah, Mr. Sahoo congratulated Petrofac and the two main subcontractors, Lahoud Engineering s.q.l. (MEI works) and Target & Jima Co. LLC (Civil works), on the remarkable twin achievements of progress and safety.

"We are delighted to present this key milestone award to Petrofac, Lahoud Engineering and Target & Jima Co. LLC. The wonderful feat is definitely commendable as they have achieved one million man hours of perfection, without a single mishap. Surely, the award stands testimony to their high standards for quality and reliability," said Salem Sahoo, General Manager of SajGas.

The project, to bring new supplies of gas, and hence energy to Sharjah and the Northern Emirates was initiated by Crescent Petroleum with the Government of Sharjah in 2004. Sajaa Gas Private Company Limited was formed by Crescent and the Government of Sharjah, with a group of Gulf Investors, to build and operate the gas sweetening and sulphur production plant.

The EPCC contract was awarded to Petrofac International just one year ago and construction started in late July 2004. At the end of May 2005, after just over 9 months on site the project is 84% complete, with commissioning scheduled for September 2005.

When completed the gas sweetening plant will process up to 600 MMSCD of gas in two parallel trains of units. The sweetened gas will then be further processed by LPG plant before distribution into the Northern Emirates gas grid to end consumers.

The sulphur removed from the gas is converted into liquid form and then converted in a state-of-the-art "Pastillation Unit", into high grade solid sulphur pastilles (pellets) for domestic and export industrial use.

The project is unique in the respect that it brings together two of Sharjah's leading companies: Crescent Petroleum, a leading regional oil and gas producer and marketer, as the project sponsor and manager; and Petrofac International, a leading international Oil & Gas EPCC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning) company. The $90 million plant, when on stream, will not only support the utilities industry for power generation but will enable growth and new projects in the industrial areas and free zones in Sharjah and the Northern Emirates.
