MTC Group supports economic development in Middle East and Gulf

MTC in its continuous support and focus on serving the countries and economies as well as the growth of the regions it operates in, is sponsoring and participating strongly in one of the most well recognized and largest economic conferences in the region, ACM, (Arab Capital Markets) which will be held in Beirut at the Phoenicia Intercontinental Hotel between the 16th-17th of June, under the auspices of Lebanese Prime Minister, Najeeb Mikati.

Dr. Saad Al Barrak, Managing Director and Vice Chairman of MTC, stated, ' MTC as the leading ME and African mobile service provider with operations in 18 countries aspires to become a global operator by 2011 and it is conferences such as this that serves as a nesting ground for ideas and issues to be discussed and solutions to be reached. MTC hopes to make use of this conference in assisting private companies and governments into transitioning into liberalized, high growth economies.'

The conference, which will be attended by 1000 delegates from 30 countries across the world, is supported by both the World Bank and IMF. Dr. Barrak will be speaking at the conference on the effect of free trade agreement, liberalization of markets and its effect on local companies as well as the opportunities and challenges that will be faced. Al Barrak's speech comes only weeks after his recent participation at the Kuwait US Free Trade Agreement conference that was held in Kuwait.

MTC recently acquired Celtel, Holland based mobile operator with 13 operations in Sub Saharan Africa in one of the biggest mobile telecom deals in the region today worth $3.4 billion. As such MTC has made its footprint in the region and Africa with over 9.5 million customers.

MTC is pursuing its 3X3X3 strategy which entails becoming a global operator with 20 million customers by 2011.

In September 2002, MTC entered into a Partner Network Agreement with Vodafone, the world's leading mobile community in Kuwait creating MTC Vodafone Kuwait. In 2003 MTC continued its expansion with the acquisition of 96.4% of Fastlink in Jordan.

MTC's aspirations did not slow down and in 2003 MTC-Vodafone Bahrain was launched with the first 3G/EDGE nationwide network in the world. In 2004 the MTC Atheer service was launched in Southern Iraq, and today covers Baghdad as well.

2004 also witnessed the Government of Lebanon handing over the management of one of the two mobile networks (Mic2) to the MTC Group, which is known now as mtc touch.

Most recently in March of 2005 MTC acquired Celtel International, a Dutch communications network company with major interests in 13 Sub-Saharan African countries, in one of the biggest telecom deals in the Middle east and Africa worth $3.36 billion. The MTC Group now operates in 18 countries. With this deal MTC group has completed its first phase of its 3X3X3 strategy which entails becoming a global operator with more than 15 million customers by 2011. MTC will continue to expand internationally through acquisitions, partnerships and green-field opportunities.
