Supported by Abu Dhabi Holding and currently under accreditation by the Ministry of Higher Education, Al Hosn University offers courses in the faculties of Engineering and Applied Science, Arts and Social Science and Business.

The undergraduate degree in Urban Planning was developed by Dr Mitchell Kosny, Professor from the School of Urban and Regional Planning at Ryerson University, Canada.

Dr Kosny was previously the Director of the School of Urban and Regional Planning from 1990 to 1995, where he expanded international relations and activities throughout Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany and China. Among various many impressive ventures, Dr Kosny has been involved in leading local government building projects throughout South Africa, Namibia, Lithuania and Palestine.

Capitalising on his knowledge and expertise, Dr Kosny has structured the course specifically for students at Al Hosn University and will offer students a career in city and regional planning domestically or internationally, utilising theoretical and practical education.

Through a variety of study options including classroom lectures, interactive seminar discussions, 'real' project based studios, field experience and independent research; students will develop an extensive understanding of the decision process and issues related to shaping individual cities and regions.

As part of the degree, students have the option of incorporating other courses offered by the University, outside the Urban Planning degree, so as they can expand their knowledge and expertise in areas of geography, ecology, sociology, economics and politics.

Professor Saghir at Al Hosn University said,
"Working to assist the United Arab Emirates become more self-reliant through an educated workforce, Al Hosn University will play a prominent role in fostering the growth of engineering, science and professional education."

The course is a four year, full-time degree, with the first, foundation year providing an introduction to urban planning. The second year will introduce the discipline and practice of city and regional planning, while the third year develops upon the student's understanding of the 'why' and 'how' of planning and, finally, the fourth year allows students to build on their individual area of interest.

Once students have completed the course they will have developed skills in research and analysing which allows them to propose solutions to any problems or issues relevant to Urban Planning.

Al Hosn University will accept its first enrolments in September 2005. The University will only offer positions for 300 students for the first few years to ensure students experience a high level of education.
