Citigroup Foundation increases its commitment to the AUB

Citigroup today announced a new $25,000 grant from the Citigroup Foundation to support the American University of Beirut (AUB)'s scholarship program.

The grant is a supplementary contribution to an existing grant of $100,000 payable over four years, which was extended by the Citigroup Foundation.

Proceeds will be used to provide financial assistance to eligible students pursuing undergraduate degrees at the Suliman S. Olayan School of Business. Citigroup and the Citigroup Foundation have been long time supporters of the AUB's scholarship program, and this grant follows a prior contribution in the amount of $ 150,000, which ended in 2002.

Elia S. Samaha, Managing Director - Citigroup Country Officer for Lebanon and Advisory Board Member to the AUB's Olayan School of Business, recently presented W. Stephen Jeffrey, AUB 's Vice President for Development and External Relations, with the donation.

"Citigroup has been a steady supporter of the AUB's scholarship program. We are proud to support higher education in Lebanon through financial aid contribution as well as direct employee involvement.
Citigroup's local and international staff are actively providing financial training to AUB students through focused, practical coursework stemming from Citigroup case studies," according to Samaha.

In April 2005, Citigroup employees and alumnus developed and delivered an accredited AUB course together with AUB staff entitled Risks in Commercial Banking. "For the third consecutive year, we've been developing and delivering this course at the AUB. This clearly demonstrates our resolve to assist the student population with a package of financial contribution and to be part of the learning process at the business faculty through various initiatives," said Samaha.

"We commend Citigroup for its continued interest in providing educational opportunities to talented young people from this region, particularly Lebanese students. Their support is significantly important to AUB at this time as we proceed with a five-year fund raising drive, which started in October 2002 and extends until September 2007," said Mr. Jeffrey. "In its Campaign for Excellence, the University plans to raise $140 million for various projects. Of this amount, $15 million is designated for financial aid to students, the largest single component of the Campaign. I am pleased to report that over two thirds of our target has been realized, thanks to generous contributions from corporate citizens such as Citigroup."

Citigroup's presence in Lebanon dates back to the 1950s. Since re-establishing its fully licensed branch in Beirut over nine years ago, Citigroup has evolved into an active corporate citizen, with a particular interest in supporting financial literacy and education.
