Honesty & Leadership
- Saturday, August 13 - 2005 at 12:33
What is the one defining factor that people look for in a leader that can't be learned? No amount of training, executive development programs or experience can teach a person to be honest and it's a trait that is at the heart of every successful leader.
To accomplish these tasks a successful leader must motivate the entire workforce towards meeting the organisation's goals. This statement, although simple, is where the difference between management and leadership comes into play. Anyone with enough motivation, desire and commitment can learn to become an effective manager provided they get the right training, education and experience. So what are some of these skills?
Management skills that need to be mastered before moving upward in a company include coaching, communication, decision making, delegation, planning & organising work, managing performance, providing feedback and finally, solving problems. These skills are at the core of transforming managers into future leaders. And once these basic skills are developed there are other traits that will help people become even more effective, such as, strategic thinking and keeping an eye on the horizon in order inspire trust within the company.
But what did I mean by my original statement about honesty & leadership? It's true that committed managers, can learn about new techniques, gain new business insights and even improve their skills through self-study programs but true leadership is something more than just being proficient with a variety of basic skills. True leadership comes when people believe in the leader's vision, direction and guidance.
True leadership involves acting ethically, being committed to both the organizational needs and the needs of the people and finally, creating a vision worth striving for. Everyone wants their leaders to be trustworthy and this characteristic is found in every successful leader!
Leaders also seek out new tasks and take responsibility for their actions. They are always searching for new ways to improve themselves and their organizations. Leaders know what they want to achieve, they set high goals, act courageously and by doing so, stir up enthusiasm in the workforce moving everyone forward toward their vision!
