Women in Oman and the rest of the GCC will finally get the attention they deserve with the holding of Women Expo 2005 at the Oman International Exhibition Centre on December 11-17 this year.

Women Expo 2005 is the Sultanate's first-ever exhibition that is designed to cater exclusively to the needs of women, regardless of age and cultural background. The seven-day event will showcase all things concerning women as they continuously make their mark in today's modern society.

Specifically, Women Expo 2005 will focus on educational opportunities available to women, the products that would enable them to improve both their looks and their health, and other things intended to significantly improve their personal lives.

"The exhibition is in response to the growing empowerment of women worldwide," said C.J. Paul, General Manager of Omanexpo, the leading events management and exhibition organising company in Oman. "It's about time for a specific show that all women can identify themselves with."

The fact that the "for women only" exhibition will be held in the Sultanate is very significant, since Omani women have long been making a difference as active participants in the country's social and economic development, with the encouragement of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

A growing number of companies, including jewellery stores, cosmetics firms and shoes manufacturers, have already reserved space at the exhibition. Many others such as educational institutions, department stores and gift shops are also expected to confirm their participation within the next few weeks.

"The interest of companies in Women Expo 2005 is very encouraging," Paul revealed. "With women making up as much as 49% of the Sultanate's population, there is clearly an existing huge market in Oman for various types of women's products."

Paul further pointed out that, apart from showcasing women's products and services, Women Expo 2005 will also feature a series of seminars on health and fitness, career choices, motherhood, women's crafts, and other timely issues that are important to women.

Women Expo 2005 is supported by Oman's Ministry of Health (MOH) and the National Association for Cancer Awareness. The MOH is endorsing the exhibition to raise awareness on public health issues such as genetic blood disorders and pre-conception care, all of which affect women and children. The National Association for Cancer Awareness, on the other hand, is backing the event to educate women on their risks for certain types of cancer.
