Scholarships still available as new term draws near

As the start of the new academic year draws closer, prospective students still have an opportunity to apply for scholarship places at the British University in Dubai (BUiD), Dubai's first research-based university for postgraduate education.

A number of scholarships are available with a value of up to 50 percent of tuition fees. The University also is offering special scholarships to UAE nationals who hold degrees from Zayed University, the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) and UAE University. The closing date for applicants is 14 September 2005, although it is expected that further scholarships will become available at a later date.

BUiD offers a unique opportunity for higher education. As one of the region's most innovative institutions, it sets the standards for study and research that will significantly contribute to the technological innovation and growth of the Arab world and beyond.

Registrar and acting chief executive of BUiD, David Lock, says "As a research-driven institution, we're eager to recruit students who will make a solid contribution to the overall understanding of critically-important subjects like education, engineering, environmental design of buildings, and information technology in the Middle East. The available scholarships will make these opportunities highly accessible to students, and we would encourage interested parties to inquire about them immediately."

Any prospective students are welcome to visit BUiD and learn more about the University and programs on offer. The next open days are on:

As well as Open Days, BUiD holds other events, such as Open Lectures which provide the opportunity for students to come to the campus and meet academic staff.

About The British University in Dubai
The British University in Dubai (BUiD) is the Middle East's first research-based university. The university was established to facilitate access to world-class education, training and research in the Middle East. BUiD aspires to the highest, internationally recognised British standards as reflected in its partnership with The University of Edinburgh, The University of Birmingham and The University of Manchester, Cardiff University and now the CASS Business school of City University. Each has a five or five-star rating in the UK national research assessment that signifies research of international standard.

The not-for-profit university offers full and part time masters degree programmes and Continuing Professional Development courses in Informatics, Engineering and Education and starting from September 2005 a new programme in the Environmental Design of Buildings is being offered. Subject to accreditation, the Finance and Banking programme will admit its first students in January 2006.

BUiD's Masters programmes in Information Technology, Project Management, The Environmental Design of Buildings and Education have received Accreditation Eligibility Status from The UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Commission for Academic Accreditation.

The founders of the University are the Al Maktoum Foundation, The Dubai Development and Investment Authority, Rolls Royce, the British Business Group and the National Bank of Dubai. The University is managed by a provisional council under the chairmanship of Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

The Emirates Group, DUCAB, Atkins and Dubai Duty Free are supporters of the University through a financial contributions or the provision of scholarships.
