Al Areen Development implements continuous environmental protection strategy as part of its commitment to sustainable growth
- Bahrain: Saturday, September 10 - 2005 at 16:19
- PRESS RELEASE
The Al Areen Holding Company, proprietor of the US$750 million Al Areen development, today affirmed its unwavering commitment to sustainable growth, which highlights the company's environmental protection charge under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) charter.
Commenting on Al Areen's environmental protection strategy, Mr. Esam Janahi, Vice Chairman of the Al Areen Holding Company, said: "Our initiatives to safeguard the environment, specifically within the vicinity of the Al Areen development, stems from our desire to balance developmental issues with concerns of natural preservation. Such efforts are also in line with our commitment to the community as a whole."
"As part of developing the project with the least impact on nature, we previously conducted extensive consultations with a number of environmental experts, and introduced their valuable input into our plan of action. We have been very diligent about considering the sensitivities of the environment around Al Areen, particularly since it neighbors the Al Areen Wildlife Park and Reserve," added Mr. Janahi.
Elaborating on the plan to preserve rare and endangered species at Al Areen, Prof. Dr. Ismail Mohammed Al Madany, General Director of Environment and Wildlife Protection of the Public Commission for the Protection of Marine Resources, Environment & Wildlife, said that medicinal plants such as Conocarpus Longifolia, Zygophyllum Simplex and Phragmites Austratus, have been identified for relocation. Al Areen has also undertaken cooperative efforts with the Reserve to protect and relocate free-roaming animal species like Addax and African Oryx.
"The main philosophy behind Al Areen's commitment is sustainable development. As a result, the Al Areen project has already studied various environmental impact assessments in order to identify environmental hot-spots for vulnerable species of both plants and animals at risk in the area, and will subsequently reintroduce these species into protected habitats," said Dr. Al Madany.
"The project will not sacrifice the environment and its wildlife for achieving economic gain. The project will be a model for conscientious sustainable development and a realistic example to be followed by other projects in the area," he added.
The Al Areen Wildlife Park and Reserve is well known at the national, regional and international levels as a haven for many rare and endangered species of flora and fauna. The preservation and propagation of these species is the main objective of the Reserve, and the Al Areen development reinforces this commitment as it continues to develop the 2,000,000 square meter project.
