Abu Dhabi's newest mall to use Tabreed's district cooling services

The deal was signed by Saifuddin.T. Rupawala, CEO of EMKE Group - owners and developers of Khalidiyah Mall, and Dany Safi, CEO of Tabreed, to supply cooling to Khalidiyah Mall upon its completion expected in July 2006.

When asked about the drive behind Tabreed's relative increase of district cooling deals in Abu Dhabi, Dany Safi answered: 'Abu Dhabi city has become one of the main cities of the world to promote and use district cooling as the ultimate method of cooling. The government realizes the detrimental effects of power generation and the outcomes of high emissions of pollutant and CO2 in the air. Therefore, promoting and using an energy friendly method of cooling has become an urged matter and it is being highly sustained by all concerned parties; government, municipality, developers as well as tenants'.

Saifee Rupawala commented: 'As owners of Khalidiyah Mall, we wanted to make sure we provide the best services to our tenants and an excellent ambiance to the shoppers, therefore it was no surprise to sign with Tabreed who is renowned for its outstanding record and services. By choosing district cooling, we also managed to free up a lot of space that would have usually been reserved for the chillers, extra pumps, electricity switch boards, and many other technical equipment. In addition, by eliminating conventional chillers from our premises, we will have a noise and vibration free ambiance'.

Khalidiyah Mall is comprised of three floors and has a semi-basement parking that can fit up to 600 cars and will host a wide list of international and renowned brands and will have a hypermarket, multiple cinemas, a food court with 2500 seating, world class amusement arcade, bowling etc. Khalidiyah Mall has a total parking facility of approx 2500 cars and is located in an easily commutable site in the densely populated Khalidiyah neighborhood.

Over the last two months, Tabreed has signed deals to cool Fujairah and Ajman's tallest towers and has also won two gold awards in the United States from IDEA, the International District Energy Association, for having the highest number of spaces cooled and the highest number of buildings connected in 2004.

District cooling is widely used throughout the UAE and around the world, piping chilled water from a centralized plant to a range of residential, commercial and government buildings. Landlords are attracted to the maintenance-free, economic and environmentally friendly cooling benefits of the technology, while tenants enjoy reduced ambient noise and better temperature control in their homes, making it the perfect solution to all cooling requirements.
