International experts to attend documentation and e-archiving conference

More than 75 experts on documentation and electronic archiving from 19 countries will attend the 'Third Conference on Documentation and Electronic Archiving' to be hosted by Dubai Municipality from 17 to 19 September 2005 at the Dubai International Convention Centre.

The conference, which is held under the banner "Knowledge Investment and Management for Decision Support", is being organised under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance and Industry, and Chairman of Dubai Municipality, in co-ordination with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It is designed to create a dynamic forum for exchanging experiences about knowledge management standards, policies and practices among diverse professionals coming from different sectors.

This was announced at a press conference on Sunday by Khalid Ali Bin Zayed, Director of Municipality Centres Department and Vice-Chairman of the conference Organising Committee, who noted that the committee had completed all arrangements for the event. He also announced names of main sponsors of the conference who included the Lootah Group of Companies, Al Bawardi Computers and Emirates Airlines as the official carriers.

He added that the conference's Scientific Committee received great response from researchers interested in participating in the event, all of whom are experts in five areas that are documentation & electronic archiving, libraries & information, Geographic Information Systems, statistics and information.

"As many as 75 researchers have been selected from among those who submitted abstracts to the committee. They represent 19 countries including the UAE, Jordan, Australia, Algeria, Iraq, Kuwait, Hungary, Morocco, USA, UK, Poland, Scotland, Switzerland, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Lebanon, Libya and Egypt," said Bin Zayed.

He said the conference would open new eras for co-operation among countries particularly in using applications of running information and knowledge in supporting decision-making processes. "It will also be a good opportunity to follow the scientific development in fields of information and knowledge management to achieve the maximum benefits from the developments," he added.

Hussein Al Fardan, who heads the executive committee said that the conference would enhance co-operation among the participating nations in the conference and will help in learning new technology and theories from experts in the field.

The event will also feature an exhibition where more than 300 organisations including service providers, solution providers, sellers, buyers, trade chambers from around the world will display their range of products, services and solutions for Documentation, Digital Archiving, Knowledge Management and Decision Support Systems.

He noted that the area of knowledge management has great potential to become the key technology in knowledge creation and its management. This major event will witness participation by government, corporate, and private professionals from all over the world including archivists, library and information science professionals, GIS professionals, IT professionals and service providers, content and knowledge managers, information providers and vendors, electronic publishing and virtual electronic communities and stakeholders in the digitisation and knowledge business.
