Global Entrepolis @ Singapore 2005 to discuss Islamic enterprise
- United Arab Emirates: Wednesday, September 07 - 2005 at 10:31
- PRESS RELEASE
Middle East enterprises looking to extend their wings in the Asia Pacific region and beyond with Singapore partnerships will find the third Global Entrepolis @ Singapore (GES) packed with potential.
Boasting a record 40 conferences and events, the mega business networking meet will run from 26 to 29 September at the Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre. Reflecting the value GES partners found in the annual event, about half of last year's 29 conferences are back this year.
The International Islamic Enterprise Forum will make a first presence at GES, affirming Singapore and the region's growing interest in the Middle East. Co-organised by the Singapore Business Federation (SBF), the umbrella organisation of business associations and chambers of commerce in Singapore, and IFIS Business Advisory, a private Islamic finance consultancy firm, the forum will highlight new financial tools and opportunities for players in Islamic enterprises. Islamic venture capitalists and investors will also have the opportunity to network with companies whose businesses are not prohibited under Islam and that have good growth potential.
GES attracts more than 10,000 participants annually from around the world. Last year, 25% of the participants were overseas delegates and visitors from more than 40 countries. GES is presented by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) together with SBF.
Mr Chua Taik Him, Assistant Managing Director, Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), said, "GES has proven to be an effective marketplace for businesses, entrepreneurs and innovators to identify, seek and secure funding, investment and business opportunities. GES is itself an innovation platform and we are excited that more players, including those from the Middle East, are taking advantage of GES by joining us this year. We are glad that GES 2005 is more diversified, more global, and more vibrant. It is certainly playing a role to make Singapore a land of business opportunities."
As a region, the Middle East is fast becoming an increasingly important trading partner for Singapore. In 2004, the Middle East was Singapore's 6th largest trading partner with overall trade doubling from a decade ago to S$33.7 billion, which is 32% higher than in 2003.
Several initiatives, such as the recent inaugural Asia-Middle East Dialogue (AMED) held in Singapore, have taken place recently to enhance trade and investment ties between Singapore and the Middle East. SBF has also signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with the apex business chambers of ten Middle Eastern countries - Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Turkey and United Arab Emirates. With GES, the Middle East now has an additional platform to tap on Singapore for opportunities in the region.
Mr Tayyeb Al Mulla of Emirates National Oil Company said, "The global magnitude of GES will undoubtedly expand our business networks and create opportunities for increased trade, investment and new business deals. Having experienced this potential when we participated in GES 2004, we are excited to return this year. The recent government initiatives between the Middle East and Singapore have also helped laid a good base for the business community to build on at the upcoming GES in Singapore."
New market opportunities
To find new markets, Middle Eastern start-ups and entrepreneurs will have 15 other international business meets at GES to grow their network outside the Middle East. They include conferences focused on ASEAN, India, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Oceania. For example, Middle Eastern enterprises interested in the China market can expect to meet more than 1,000 Chinese businessmen at this year's GES. The Chinese delegation will be one of the strongest at GES and will host five business conferences in Mandarin.
Industry heavyweights to share insights
Beyond networking, Middle Eastern participants will also find the latest in management strategies and focus at GES. GES's flagship thought leadership conference, Captains of Industry, will discuss scenario planning and managing economic surprises in times of uncertainty. Leading the distinguished speakers will be Peter Schwartz, a renowned futurist and business strategist and author of definitive books on scenario planning.
Other eminent speakers include Mr Hussain Sultan, Group Chief Executive and Board Member, Emirates National Oil Company; Mr Arif Naqvi, Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Office, Abraaj Capital Limited; Mr Tarek Sultan, Chairman and Managing Director, PWC Logistics; Mr Gerard Kleisterlee, President & CEO, Royal Philips Electronics; Mr Robert D. Johnson, Chairman, Honeywell Aerospace; Mr Chen Tianqiao, Chairman & CEO of Shanda Interactive Entertainment Ltd; and Mr Deepak Ghaisas, CEO India Operations & CFO of i-flex solutions. i-flex solutions was the recipient of the prestigious GES Award, which honours Asia's Emerging Technopreneur of the Year, at the event in 2004.
Another of GES anchor conferences, TechVenture Asia 2005, which is into its ninth year, is specially focused on the VC industry. Organised by TIF Ventures Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of EDB, this technology and venture financing conference will see international VCs such as Dr Adnan Ali Al-Sultan, Vice-Chairman & Managing Director, National Technology Enterprises, and business communities share information and discuss issues relevant to investing in emerging enterprises and the pulse of business today. Middle Eastern start-ups and enterprises can seek to tap on Singapore's vibrant venture capital (VC) scene which currently has S$16.1 billion (US$9.6 billion) worth of funds managed by 157 VC firms.
New industry conferences to push knowledge frontiers
New conferences at GES 2005 include Global Energy Security: Competition or Cooperation that will focus on how China and India should position themselves in ensuring energy security without negatively affecting the global energy market. It will also discuss how Middle East producers view fast-rising Asian energy demands amongst other topics.
Examining how innovation impacts businesses in the future, another new industry conference is the Future Technology Impact - New Approaches for Identifying Innovation Opportunities. Also organised by SBF, the conference will discuss case studies from several multinational companies' technology impact programmes.
Mr Gary Fung, Managing Director, Zenith Events, the organiser of GES 2005, said, "Zenith and our partners have drawn up an event that will seamlessly weave in greater diversity and depth for networking opportunities. The conference line-up and showcase of emerging technologies, innovation and enterprises will offer participants and delegates an even more impactful, rewarding and exciting experience at GES 2005."
Strong government support reflected in Guest-of-Honour list
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will open GES 2005 while Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong will be the guest-of-honour at the gala dinner and Asian Innovation Awards. Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Defence, will grace the opening of The Enterprise Exchange, a mega exhibition and the business, innovation, technology and industry showcase of GES.

Networking Events
Three networking evenings hosted by Singapore Business Federation will be organised to help match-make participants with corresponding agenda. Taking one night each from 27 to 29 September at The Enterprise Exchange, the sessions are themed "Market Connexions" - opening doors to new markets, "Power Partnerships" - introducing potential business partners, and "Money Matters" - linking innovators to investors.
Business Matching Portal
Introduced during Global Entrepolis @ Singapore (GES) 2004, the online Business Matching Portal continues to provide virtual business community for participants to match, meet and network before and during GES. The Portal is an online application, which allows participants to make contact with fellow participants with matching business and investment interests. It enables delegates to take a more targeted approach while at the GES thus saving time and effort to connect with potential partners.
More innovation adds buzz to mega exhibition
The Enterprise Exchange is specially designed to encourage entrepreneurs to network, interact and create business opportunities with some of the world's most successful and innovative players, and to facilitate enterprise formation, both established and emerging. The diversity of the Enterprise Exchange enables exhibitors and participants to explore partnerships that they may not have previously thought were possible.
About 170 exhibitors from different industries and markets are expected to gather at this year's Enterprise Exchange. Middle Eastern trade visitors can also find a new cluster of booths that highlights the creativity of Singapore-based utility innovations, some of which have won international awards. Utility innovations are inventions that solve problems associated with day-to-day applications in a creative and effective manner, even if some may not be high-tech in nature.
HOT Events
The popular HOTPitch, HOTSource and HOTDate events are back as well. HOTPitch lets entrepreneurs and innovators take to the stage to pitch their ideas in two minutes. HOTSource lets multinational companies, large corporations and government agencies share their technology and procurement roadmaps with smaller companies with the view to creating joint business opportunities. HOTDate allows sellers to rotate among buyers at seven-minute intervals to sell their ideas and innovations.
