  • PRESS RELEASE

Under the patronage of H.E. Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Education, GEMS Education Symposium held today, focused on the International Baccalaureate Programme.

The symposium was inaugurated by Dr. Jamal Al Muhairi, Under Secretary, Ministry of Education and Youth.

"I am certain that this symposium will contribute to the further enhancement of the United Arab Emirates as a centre for educational excellence", said Dr. Muhairi.

Sir Michael Tomlinson FRSA, Chairman of the GEMS Advisory Board headed the symposium with Professor J.J Thompson CBE, Head of the Research Unit for the IB Programme, at the University of Bath.

The symposium addressed the growing interest in the IB Programme and provided information about its three stages for students in the primary, middle and secondary school years. In addition to serving their purpose individually, these stages also provide a continuous curriculum sequence for students and teachers.
Prof. Thompson commented: "I'm delighted to be part of this GEMS hosted symposium. GEMS core values especially that of World Citizenship are consistent to those of the IBO."

The symposium highlighted that the IB Programme offers a broad and balanced education that provides students with flexible choices for their higher education pursuits. The Programme aspires to promote students' intellectual, social, personal and emotional growth to help them become responsible world citizens.

Sir Michael Tomlinson added: "Education is the most precious gift you can give your child, moreover, an education that will prepare them for their future-both for work and future life."

The symposium was part of GEMS commitment to the community, with the aim of raising awareness about education and educational issues. The event explored other important curricula issues and their implications on parent's decision when choosing a curriculum to secure their child's future.
