UAE University and Cosmo Oil signed a research cooperation agreement

The UAE University (UAEU) and Cosmo Oil Co., Ltd.(Japan) signed yesterday a Research Cooperation Agreement, by which UAEU will conduct laboratory and field experiments to test the efficiency of the Cosmo's product 'Pentakeep-V Fertilizer' under the climatic conditions of the United Arab Emirates.

The Agreement was signed by H.E. Dr. Hadif Bin Jouan Al Dhahiri, Vice Chancellor of UAEU, and by Naomasa Kondo, Managing Director of Cosmo Oil Co., Ltd at a joint press conference held at UAEU in Al-Ain city.

The signing ceremony was also attended by UAEU Provost Dr. Abdulla Al-Khanbashi, and UAEU Assistant Provost for Research Dr. Maitha Salem Al-Shamsi.

Addressing the parties present at the signing ceremony, H. E. Dr. Hadif Bin Jouan AL Dhahiri, UAEU Vice Chancellor, said: 'We, at UAEU, are pleased to cooperate with a reputed company such as Cosmo, and we are always ready to put forward our research infrastructure and experience to provide local solutions to delicate and complicated issues faced by different local and regional public and private entities. This endeavor of research and development by UAEU will certainly contribute to the overall progress of our dear UAE and of the whole region. '

H.E. Dr. Dhahiri added: 'building this type of research cooperation relationships with different entities is one important aspect of our eFors role of generating funded dedicated research for a wide and diverse set of cliental. '

According to Mr. Naomasa Kondo, Managing Director of Cosmo Oil Co., Ltd.,: 'Pentakeep-V has a remarkable effect of growth promotion on various plants, which is distinguished from other fertilizers by enabling plants to grow under severe soil conditions such as with high salt, that will result in great benefits to plants grown under arid and semi-arid regions'. 'Due to the potential use of Pentakeep-V that enhances salt tolerance of plants, Cosmo Oil Co. Ltd. has shown genuine interest in evaluating this product under UAE conditions in cooperation with the main research and development institution in the UAE, namely the UAEU represented today by H.E. Dr. Dhahiri for whom I extend my best wishes', Mr. Kondo added.

As for Dr. Maitha Salem Al-Shamsi, Assistant Provost for Research, she stated that: 'the scope of services that will be provided by the UAE University, under this Research Cooperation Agreement, includes investigating the availability of different nutrients in applied Pentakeep-V to different UAE soils, and studying its effects on fertilizer efficiency and nutrient uptake by some plants grown in different UAE soils.'

Prof. Mahmoud Alafifi, Principle Investigator, explained that This research project contains two components, soil fertility, plant nutrition component and date palm component. This research project will develop an efficient and reliable evaluation for PENTAKEEP-V fertilizer profitability in agricultural sectors in UAE that may help in more efficient use of this fertilizer.

Cosmo Oil Co., Ltd. is one of the major oil refining and energy supplying companies of Japan. Cosmo Oil is actively associated with the oil industry of United Arab Emirates over thirty years through Abu Dhabi Oil Company (Japan) (ADOC), which is a subsidiary of Cosmo. ALA (Pentakeep-V) is very well evaluated by the growers of vegetables and fruit trees and its estimated sale in Japan reaches 10 tons per year. Export to other countries also launched and the first country to export was to South Korea.

It is their intention to introduce Pentakeep-V in the Middle East and to find the best use method of it in this region, in cooperation with UAE University.
