HCT, which witnessed a record number of entrants this year, opted for Fujitsu Siemens Computers' innovative LIFEBOOK T4010 - its lightweight convertible laptop which integrates the functions of a high-powered notebook with those of a tablet PC.

The LIFEBOOK T4010s will be used by first year entrants at Abu Dhabi Men's College and fit with the UAE Government's ongoing e-learning strategy. HCT will be implementing an IT training initiative, supported by a college-run help station, to ensure the students get the most from their notebooks.

'HCT is committed to ensuring its students are equipped with the latest technology to enable them to get the best out of their education. We will be supporting this endeavour with the necessary training and learning tools to ensure students realise the full potential of these machines,' added Dr. Tayeb Kamali, Vice Chancellor of Higher Colleges of Technology.

The small form factor LIFEBOOK T4010 is a key product in Fujitsu Siemens Computers' mobility range.

'Weighing in at less than two kilogram's, the LIFEBOOK T4010 is ultra-portable and can be transformed into a tablet PC with a simple turn of the display,' explained Habib Bouchrara, Vice President, International Sales Region, Fujitsu Siemens Computers.

'It is ideal for students and for professionals on the move who require information and data-collection at their fingertips. In addition, its light mass means that students do not have the extra weight to carry round which is more convenient and results in less stress on the back and shoulders.'

Billed as a 'no-limits' laptop the LIFEBOOK T4010 offers pen-enabled functionality in all modes. It provides high performance and operates for long working hours away from power sources, has an interchangeable modular bay allowing for the addition of a second hard drive or battery, which lets it operate without recharging for up to 8.5 hours, and boasts wireless communication through WLAN and Bluetooth technology.

'The LIFEBOOK T4010 is the smallest and lightest 12-inch, 'modular bay inclusive' convertible notebook with real usage opportunity as a tablet PC,' said Bouchrara. 'This battery longevity is ideal for students as it means they can have all day use without plugging into the mains because of the modular bay's second battery option.

'The wireless communication option also allows students to stay connected throughout the day, where ever they are, resulting in increased productivity and less hassle.'

The ultra-portable LIFEBOOK T4010 allows meetings to be held virtually anywhere. The Microsoft Windows Tablet PC Edition 2005 operating system eliminates the labour-intensive handling of notes, as the handwriting recognition program simply converts these into normal word processor text. Innovative screen technology gives the T4010 an extra-wide viewing angle, allowing several persons to follow the proceedings.

'The new T Series notebook will be a great companion to the students,' added Bouchrara. 'It saves on rework time and eliminates paper. Ideas can be illustrated directly on the tablet and distributed via email. With the T4010, all the limitations of plain notebooks have been eliminated.

'With the added Inking Technology software, students can also do assignments on-line further increasing efficiency and reducing stress.'

Fujitsu Siemens Computers' 'Made4You' system, which offers tailor-made products to meet individual requirements of customers with all required software pre-installed at the factory in Germany was also a deciding factor.

'Fujitsu Siemens' offering was selected because of its compactness, light weight, robustness, simplicity, modularity and wireless connectivity capabilities,' said Saleem Raza, CIO of CERTSOFT - the IT projects division of HCT. 'The reliable LIFEBOOK T4010 is ideal for today's students because of its features which are suited to university life requirements.'
