BUiD examines the impact of 'rocket-science' in the world of high finance

  • United Arab Emirates: Thursday, October 13 - 2005 at 12:29
  • PRESS RELEASE

The British University in Dubai (BUiD), the region's leading research based university, is to host a special public lecture which will examine the latest developments in the world of high finance and how so-called 'rocket-scientists' are now being used to predict futures markets.

Roy Batchelor, HSBC Professor of Banking and Finance at the London-based Cass Business School, regularly addresses international audiences, and his public lecture at BUiD will focus on the impact new high-tech mathematical techniques are having on the financial world.

The public lecture, on Monday 17 October at 14:30, will also examine the hidden risks that emerge when these mathematical models are misapplied, and the adverse incentives which are created when banks move away from their traditional lending activities.

"To have a guest speaker of Professor Batchelor's calibre demonstrates BUiD's growing position as world-class academic institution. The lecture is directly relevant to the impressive developments taking place in the finance and banking in the UAE and indicate the quality of future research from BUiD," said David Lock, BUiD's registrar and acting chief executive.

Cass Business School - a leader in the finance and management field - and BUiD recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding to form a partnership which will see the creation of the Institute of Finance and Banking at BUiD.

The first programme offered will be a Masters degree in Finance and Banking, and is currently being prepared for accreditation, and it is expected to be available from January 2006.

"BUiD is a shining example of a modern university in a region which is experiencing tremendous financial investment and change; I am delighted to be delivering the public lecture in such a dynamic environment and building on our new relationship," said Professor Batchelor.

During his distinguished career, Professor Batchelor has conducted research for the European Commission and the UK Treasury, and served on the Bank of England's Panel of Academic Advisors.
