Dubai and Frankfurt unite efforts to boost biotech in the Middle East

In the presence of Mr. Roland Koch, Prime Minister of the state of Hessen in Germany, Ahmad bin Byat, Director General of Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone and Dr. Christian Garbe, Managing Director of the Frankfurt Biotechnology Innovation Center (FIZ), today signed a Memorandum of Understanding between Dubai Biotechnology and Research Park (DuBiotech) and FIZ to jointly develop in life sciences research, education, professional training, and the development of marketable products in the health sector.

"This agreement enables DuBiotech to create a marketplace of ideas producing scientific innovations for the Middle East. Furthermore, FIZ's partnership with DuBiotech indicates the opportunities DuBiotech offers to the rest of the world," says Dr. Abdulqader Al Khayat, Executive Director of DuBiotech.

"With this cooperation, we will expand our worldwide network and secure further access to research knowledge and emerging markets. The cooperation with the United Arab Emirates represents a great opportunity for German and European enterprises in the sector of life sciences and healthcare to open up new markets in the Middle East and will enable them to bring together resources for groundbreaking and profitable projects,"

The recent opening of the Dubai International Financial Exchange (DIFX), the first international stock exchange in the Middle East, helps in creating an excellent framework for the engagement of foreign investors that will no doubt facilitate DuBiotech's task of accelerating the development of Dubai's biotechnology industry.

About DuBiotech

Announced in February 2005, the Dubai Biotechnology and Research Park (DuBiotech) is a science and business park dedicated to the biotech industry, set within a free zone infrastructure. DuBiotech has two main areas of interest. The first is the Foundation for Research and Innovation (FRI) which will be the main arm focusing on government funded R&D. The FRI will initially focus on medical research and genetics, plant biotechnology encompassing food and agricultural biotech, environmental biotech and equine-related biotechnology. Other areas include drug discovery, stem cell research, infectious diseases and forensic research. The second arm of DuBiotech aims to set up a biotechnology industry cluster with the appropriate infrastructure, facilities and service for incubators, R&D labs, biotech-related educational institutions, suppliers, biotech-related manufacturing companies and organizations from other sectors in the industry. The Frankfurt Biotechnology Innovation Center, Frankfurt Main (FIZ), is a research cluster that works close to industries and hence makes business settlement and cooperation worldwide possible. Marketable concepts at the interface between biotechnologies, industry and the financial world are generated. The main emphasis of the international research activities is placed on the sector of indication of inflammatory diseases and oncology, as well as affections of the central nervous system.
