Streamlined and aimed at effective user interface, the website features a special section dedicated to the late President of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan; featuring his most important environmental conservation contributions, from 1972-2004, in issues such as agriculture, water, combating desertification and protecting endangered species. The section also includes a photo and video gallery.
The Our Response to Bird Flu section carries several downloadable reports and action plans produced by the Agency about this disease and its implications for the UAE. Visitors can also download pdf files of awareness brochures and posters with helpful tips on how to protect themselves and their families.
The website features a unique forum called Speak Your Mind, where visitors can debate hot environmental topics and offer their opinion. New functionality also includes the ability to browse a photo gallery displaying the UAE's diverse flora and fauna.
The Our Environment: Know More! section carries a database of pictures, names and distribution of wild plants in the UAE. The Agency plans to include a similar database of UAE wildlife in the near future.
Moreover, featured on the website are a list of environmental laws and decrees passed in the UAE, and a link to a database of all publications and journals such as the Agency's quarterly Al Dhabi available at the Agency's library, which holds one of the largest collections on the environment and wildlife in the UAE. Visitors can also view 1-minute excerpts of environmental documentaries produced by the Agency.
Moreover, Be One with Nature allows Internet users to discover fascinating facts about the UAE's rarely-visited places of natural beauty such as the islands and protected areas, all the while encouraging visitors to respect and appreciate the UAE's natural heritage.
As part of its new e-services initiative, the Agency's website allows visitors the capability to apply online for any vacancies and the chance to place a request for one of EAD's publication. Future e-services include the capability to apply online for the Agency's services such as a fisheries license, a Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) permit or even an eco-field trip.
"The Internet is increasingly becoming a more popular mechanism for the public to access information or statistics about their environment, that is why I am proud to announce the launching of this improved website as a productive destination for anyone interested in knowing more about our precious environment,"said Aysha Matar Al Ketbi, Webmaster in the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi.
"Internet users are now just clicks away from any information they need about the Agency including its latest news, environmental news in the UAE and even environmental news from around the world. It also includes any agreements we have signed, projects, any training or career opportunities available and the latest environmental exhibitions and conferences being organized in the UAE. Through this website, the Agency is continuing to work inline with its mission to increase awareness of the general public on key environmental issues," added Al Ketbi.
Coming soon to the website is Kids 4 Earth, a portal on important aspects children need to know about their environment and Endangered Planet, which carries facts on the world's endangered species and miniature maps on where they still survive. In the House features a reproduction of a typical household in the UAE showing the high levels of waste, and water and energy consumption and tips on reducing those levels.
