Saeed Al Suwaidi, Director of Studies and Planning, DED, said:
'A panel of suitably qualified and experienced individuals has been drawn from universities, academic research centers, government and industry to evaluate the submissions. The panel has been carefully selected to ensure that all stakeholders of the UAE economy are adequately represented and that the judging criteria will be applied meticulously.'
'Zayed University has been working together with the DED to establish the highest standards for economic and scientific research in the UAE, and the assessment criteria have been established with this objective in mind,' said Dr. Kenneth Wilson, Professor of Economics and Director of the Economic & Policy Unit, ZU. 'We also aim to ensure that the research will assist the business community and government in the emirate and help build stronger links between these groups' he added.
The judging criteria focus on submissions that apply research to the economic development of the UAE. Submissions must have the potential for significant economic impact within the UAE in one or more of the areas. These include fostering business expansion, improving business profitability, facilitating national employment and enhancing the national workforce, reducing costs and increasing economic efficiency and productivity, improving quality of products, services or working environment and promoting the development of international economic opportunities in the UAE.
Submissions will also be judged on their creativity and innovation, in addition to the extent to which they have addressed issues in the fields of economic and business development in the UAE.
Appropriate research design and methodology, valuable and relevant policy advice to government and well developed methods for evaluating the impact on the U.A.E economy will also be taken into consideration while assessing the submission.
DERA was developed by the DED in coordination with ZU in December 2004, to promote scientific economic research within the UAE. The award is granted for the best original research related to economic development in the UAE. All researchers and students resident in the UAE at the time of submission, including nationals and expatriates are eligible for the award and a total prize package of 100,000 AED is on offer for the top six projects.
