  • PRESS RELEASE

The regional media was given a glimpse of the future generations of General Motors' vehicles yesterday at a Middle East International Motor Show preview hosted by Larry Burns, Vice President of General Motors Research & Development and Strategic Planning and Terry Johnsson, Managing Director, General Motors Middle East.

Larry Burns is driving innovation into today's vehicles and championing GM's 'reinvention' of the automobile with a goal to realise sustainable mobility with vehicles that are aspirational and affordable. On display at the event was the Sequel concept car, which embodies GM's vision of reinventing the automobile with a fusion of technologies that includes advanced materials, electronic controls, computer software and advanced propulsion.

"GM's aim is to design and validate a fuel cell propulsion system by 2010 that is competitive with current internal combustion systems on durability and performance and that can be built affordably,"

commented Larry Burns. "The Sequel's performance is achieved with technology available today and does not depend upon science yet to be invented."

General Motors also took advantage of the preview to unveil some of the highlights of this year's Middle East International Motor Show which opens to the public at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre on December 12th.

The models on display included the next generations of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet Aveo.

The comprehensively redesigned, full-sized Tahoe incorporates new powertrain, chassis, safety and interior systems. These integrated systems are captured within a refined, distinctly designed package that leads its segment in performance, safety, efficiency and capability. The Tahoe is powered by a Vortec 5.3 litre V-8 engine which produces 320 horsepower and 470 Nm of torque, an 8% horsepower increase over the existing model.

The all-new Aveo will serve as a benchmark for exterior and interior craftsmanship. It is a totally new car, with a more dynamic exterior look. Its attractive interior, which is best in class in terms of space, has been improved significantly through the addition of a series of new comfort and convenience features that are generally found in higher-end, higher-priced vehicles; these include tilt steering, a driver's seat armrest, power windows, power door locks and remote controlled central door locking.

Also unveiled for the first time in the region were the Cadillac XLR-V and the Saab 9-3 SportCombi. The XLR-V is the newest addition to Cadillac's family of high-performance V-Series vehicles. The XLR-V is equipped with a Northstar 4.4 litre V-8 supercharged engine, producing 443 horsepower. Its aggressive torque curve, enabled by the choice of a supercharged engine, gives the XLR-V acceleration capable of placing it firmly in the under-5-second-club for 0-to-100km/h time - a signature capability of V-Series vehicles.

The all-new Saab 9-3 SportCombi moves Saab into the premium, midsize wagon segment for the first time by combining distinctive design, sporty driving dynamics and the functionality of a five-door vehicle. It appeals to customers who need the versatility of a wagon without compromising their desire for driving satisfaction.

"We have 12 major product launches planned for 2006 and many of these great new products will be on display for the very time in the Middle East at the Motor Show," commented Terry Johnsson. "A new generation of vehicles is being launched at the Show, encompassing all GM brands including Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC, HUMMER, Saab and Opel."
