- United Arab Emirates: Monday, December 12 - 2005 at 11:15
- PRESS RELEASE
Signalling the Gulf Region's growing significance in global media markets, Sumner Redstone, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Viacom (NYSE: VIA, VIA.B), will be attending the Dubai International Film Festival.
Viacom has a leading position across a variety of media, such as broadcast and cable television, radio, online and outdoor advertising. It is a market leader in the creation, promotion and distribution of entertainment, news, sports and music. Amongst Viacom's stable of global brands are CBS, MTV, Nickelodeon, VH1 and Paramount Pictures as well as its presence in the Middle East through Showtime. Mr. Redstone has been Chairman of the Board of Viacom since 1987 and Chief Executive Officer since 1996.
"I am thrilled to be back in Dubai," said Mr. Redstone. "It is inspiring to see just how much Dubai has developed in the five years since I was last here. Events such as the Dubai International Film Festival confirm that Dubai is now a major cultural and business center."
He continued, "I am also pleased to meet with my colleagues at Showtime. The Middle Eastern media market is poised to grow substantially as a more liberal media environment, a greater desire for international programming and an excess of liquidity provide great opportunity to networks, programmers and advertisers alike."
Commenting on Mr. Redstone's visit, Peter Einstein, Showtime CEO, said,
"Sumner is undoubtedly one of the true giants of our industry, and I am delighted to welcome him back to Dubai and to the Dubai International Film Festival."
Mr. Redstone's visit coincides with the second annual Dubai International Film Festival for which Showtime is the Official Broadcaster and a Gold sponsor. As part of this unique partnership with DIFF, Showtime has launched a free-to-air 24-hour channel called DIFF TV, which provides comprehensive information and coverage of all the major red carpet events, as well as behind-the-scenes interviews with the actors, producers and directors of the movies being shown during DIFF 2005. Showtime also owns the Hollywood Gala night on December 14, which will be attended by major industry figures, including director David Burke and actor and international ambassador for DIFF Morgan Freeman amongst others.
