LG, and its agent MEC sponsor Korean Studies Unit at UJ

A ceremony took place on Monday Dec. 12 to inaugurate the the Korean Studies Unit at the University of Jordan's (UJ) Language Center.

The facility was financed and fully equipped by LG Electronics and its agent the Middle East Complex for Engineering, Electrical and Heavy Industries (MEC).

The unit contains various books on Korean history, music and language, along with an array of Korean books translated into Arabic, all aimed at acquainting UJ students and visitors with the various aspects of the Korean culture. The facility, which LG equipped with an LG-made plasma TV and a DVD player, will also exhibit the latest LG technologies and digital products.

The inauguration ceremony was held under the patronage of HE Korean Ambassador to Amman Mr. Y.S.Shin and UJ President Dr. Abdul Rahim Al-Huneiti. Also present at the ceremony were Director of the Language Center Dr. Ahmad Majdoubeh, LG General Manager in Amman Mr. T. Y. Lee, and MEC Chairman Mr. Usama Al-Khalili and a number of UJ faculty members, students and guests.

Speeches at the opening ceremony, which praised the initiative, focused on the importance of cultural communication between Jordan and Korea and the need for a true partnership between the private sector and the various civil society institutions to achieve comprehensive development in local communities.

In his address to the meeting, Mr. Lee commended that LG is very pleased and proud to participate in the event with collaboration of Korean Embassy to boost up the Jordanian-Korean ties and expressed the plan to extend the partnership with UJ to other areas such as R & D and medical event. Korean Ambassador highlighted the strengthened relationship between the two emerging countries, citing the shared spirit of perseverance, determination and desire to achieve prosperity and he hoped to continue to enlarge the relation in cultural areas.

LG and MEC took the opportunity to announce the names of students granted full scholarships at UJ. These students, who recorded high grades in the secondary school exams yet are unable to afford their university studies, were selected with the help of the UJ.

Mr. Al-Khalili informed in his remarks that LG would be sending these students, upon completing their undergraduate studies, for training in South Korea for two or three months to return and take job opportunities at one of MEC's plants in Jordan or the region.

The MEC chairman added that these scholarships would be granted at a full coverage and announced plans to expand the other programs in the coming years.
