A new consortium consisting of the MTN Group Ltd, Raya, Golden Pyramids Plaza (GPP) and Stars Communications has been formed, to consider bidding for the third mobile operator license. Each of the consortium members brings to the consortium unique experience and capabilities.
With a market capitalization of over US$14 billion, the MTN Group is a large telecommunications company listed on the JSE Securities Exchange South Africa. MTN has built one of Africa's leading mobile telecommunication brands, and is one of the largest cellular providers in the region with over 20 million subscribers. It has investments spread in 10 countries on the African continent and together with its Iranian partners has just acquired a license to operate the 2nd GSM network in Iran.
The MTN Group brings to the consortium its wide experience in establishing and running world-class cellular networks. Operating in mature as well as in new markets since 1994, MTN would give the consortium an important edge as a third operator in the Egyptian market.

The Egyptian Government is currently in the process of issuing a Request For Proposal in regard to the third mobile operator license in Egypt.
