Dubai banker's online initiative brings instant charity results
- United Arab Emirates: Wednesday, December 28 - 2005 at 10:43
- PRESS RELEASE
An online initiative by a Dubai banker has paid instant dividends for the 'Seeing Is Believing' charity, which aims to raise enough funds to restore sight to one million blind people over the next three years.
Within hours, Owen had collected in excess of US $10,000 in sponsorship pledges for his forthcoming attempt at the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon 2006, which will be run on January 6.
"I've never run a marathon before but I promised visitors to my fundraising page that I would do all the hard work, train and complete the marathon if they help me make a difference to Seeing Is Believing," said Owen.
"If I can get this result in a few hours - think what can be achieved before the marathon gets under way."
The Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon 2006 will be the first major sporting and community initiative for the emirate in the New Year. The event has recently been ranked as among the world's top 10 marathons by no less an authority than Dr. Frederico Rosa, one of the most influential figures in world athletics.
All AED25 entry fees for the event's 3 kilometre fun run will be donated to 'Seeing Is Believing.
"This is an extremely worthwhile cause with every cent going towards curing blindness," said Belman. "It is humbling to know that just US $30 is needed to restore one person's sight."
