Dr. Lim, who owns the largest surgical practice in Singapore, and currently works as a regular visiting specialist at Belhoul Speciality Hospital, will speak about a major breakthrough in the area of laparoscopic exploration and the remarkable development in stem cell research and its future. The lecture will be at 3.30pm on the 24th and will be followed by Dr. Lim's colleague, Dr. Kum at 2.30pm on the 25th of January.
Dr. Lim, who is the pioneer in Robotic general surgery both in Singapore and in Asia since 2004 and to date is the leader in the field, believes most respected hospitals in the world will be using robots to perform some of the most complex surgeries without making large incisions. The Centre for Robotic Surgery, a division of Susan Lim Surgery, is at the cutting edge of research in its field.
'It is a great opportunity for me to share with my colleagues here in the UAE and the region, the advances we have been able to achieve in the field of minimally invasive surgery. We were the first to conduct mammotome breast biopsy in 1998 and now specialise in treating the full range of breast diseases and breast cancer.'
'The Robotic system we put together, named Da Vinci, combines a camera that provides a magnified 3-D view of the patient's body with robotic arms designed for greater levels of dexterity and equipped with tremor elimination capabilities, wristed instruments and seven degrees of freedom of movement. These features allow surgeons to perform technically demanding procedures with unparalleled surgical precision, control and accuracy.' Added Dr. Susan Lim
This new state-of-the-art approach 'keyhole surgery' is suitable for any procedure that requires fine stitching, fine dissection, or a magnified view.
'With traditional laparoscopic surgery, there is no magnification and surgeons are limited to a two-dimensional (2-D) image. The long inflexible instruments require surgeons to adopt uncomfortable positions to manipulate the instruments. In contrast, robotic surgery is more sophisticated and advanced than standard laparoscopic surgery because of the 10 times magnification and three-dimensional (3-D) stereoscopic view.' Explained Dr. Lim
Dr. Lim's pioneering work in this type of surgery has earned her top recognition from Trinity College at the prestigious University of Melbourne, Australia. She has been honoured with the title of Fellow in a special ceremony held late last year.
Robotic general surgery guru will be in Dubai for Arab Health
Specialist surgeon Susan Lim, who pioneered the first ever liver transplant surgery successfully in Asia in 1990, is going to be the keynote speaker at the Arab Health Conference held in the Dubai World Trade centre on 24 January 2006.
