No single clinic, hospital or community network can solve the problem of rising diabetes, the experts agreed - the only solution lies in a concerted, multi-disciplinary approach covering all aspects of the disorder and spread across every level of healthcare in a nation.
Even a comprehensive national diabetes program is unthinkable without a system of surveillance and monitoring, regional World Health Organization advisor Dr. O. M. Khatib told the assembled delegates.
With every day that passes, the Gulf States in particular pay a very high cost for their lack of diabetes prevention and monitoring efforts, Dr. Khalid Al Rubeaan, Director of the Diabetes Center at the King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Saudi Arabia, told the congress.
Professor David R. Matthews of the Oxford Diabetes Centre in the UK said the world is faced with an obesity epidemic, and is taking its toll on increasing numbers of children in the majority of developed countries and threatening those in developing countries.
The conference included presentations from international specialists on subjects relating to obesity, insulin resistance, prevention and management of Type 2 Diabetes, as well as childhood and adolescent Diabetes and weight management for youth, and the use of oral agents in diabetes management.
'The diabetes conference aims to create a worthwhile learning environment for professionals to exchange clinical and personal experiences and meet leaders who have played a pioneering role in the field,' explained Simon Page, Project Director, IIR Middle East.
The conference program was specifically designed for professionals involved in diabetes, including cardiologists, diabetologists, dieticians, endocrinologists, physicians, pediatricians, diabetes nurses, G.P s and Pharmacists.
