The DED also became one of the pioneering government departments in the UAE to sign up for the corporate membership of the EEG and institute a full-fledged recycling and environmental awareness campaign amongst its employees.

According to the terms of the agreement the EEG will set up a recycling program at the Department's premises.

Speaking about DED's environmental awareness initiative Mr. Ali Ibrahim, Deputy Director General for Executive Affairs, DED, said: 'As the Department of Economic Development we have a responsibility to lead by example in the responsible usage of resources to ensure the sustainable development of Dubai's economy. The DED has always been on the lookout for initiatives that promote waste minimization and thus lead to conservation of essential resources. The recycling programs being set up within the department will go along way towards fulfilling this objective,' he added.

'The agreement aims at highlighting the role of government departments and the business sector in protecting the environment,' said Ms. Habiba Sultan Al Marashi, Chairperson EEG. 'We look forward to working with a progressive department like the DED which has always been conscious of its Corporate Social Responsibility. We hope more government departments will follow the lead taken by DED,' she added.

The EEG will provide the infrastructure, both logistical and educational, to facilitate the recycling of paper and cardboard, aluminum cans and toner cartridges. Support will include sending an expert speaker to the DED to provide information and motivation for the introduction of a comprehensive recycling programme.

The recycling program to be established at the DED office will include the setting 33 large recycling bins at strategic locations throughout the Department's Head Office in Deira and the Al Rumool Centre.

At a later stage, a recycling centre will be established at the Department. This will enable DED to expand its recycling program to encompass plastic recycling. The recycling centre will consist of three color-coded cages, one each for paper, plastic and cans. Each cage has a slit in the front to allow users to drop their waste in the cage. This will facilitate convenient collection of aluminium cans, paper and plastic wastes and ensure proper waste management practices.

About Department of Economic Development (DED):
The Department of Economic Development (DED) was established in March 1992, with the objective to organise, regulate and boost trade and industry within the Emirate of Dubai. The DED has moulded its mission of building a futuristic establishment, in accordance with the vision of the Government of Dubai and in the light of globalisation and the requirements of a digital economy. One of its key functions is to encourage local and foreign investments in commercial and industrial projects, and create the appropriate environment for investors.

The DED's other functions comprise a wide range of regulatory activities including the preparation and maintenance of a commercial register and the supervision of all organisations. The DED is responsible for regulating the affairs of commercial agents and brokers and commercial advertising offices, in addition to overseeing and controlling the insurance industry in the Emirate. Examining the participation of the government in the private sector and representing the government in companies where it has a stake, also comes under the purview of the DED.

About Emirates Environmental Group (EEG):

The EEG is a non-profit non-government organization, established in 1991. They have a strong relationship with the United Nations, reflected in their accreditation to the Governing Council of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The EEG has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The EEG is the first environmental NGO in the world to be accredited with the ISO 14001 certification for its environment management system.

In 2001, they started recycling efforts in the United Arab Emirates with 6 client organisations, and have now expanded their efforts to over 247 organisations. No organisations have dropped out of the program. Moreover, collections from most organisations have risen sharply once employees have been educated to the benefits of recycling (e.g. there were many reports of employees bringing recyclables from home to their places of work for collection by EEG).
