"Although difficult to precisely quantify, fraud represents a significant cost to the GSM industry and the Fraud Forum's role is to help operators tackle the problem by making relevant information available. The Forum has a wealth of expertise available, based on the experience of its members, and this week's meeting in Bahrain provides a valuable opportunity to promote fraud awareness and encourage best practice." explains GSM Association Fraud Forum Chair Nick Mann, from Vodafone Group.
"Since its inception, the GSM Association's Fraud Forum has endeavored to help operators better manage fraud by identifying and analysing fraud threats. The sharing of experiences and knowledge, which is a critical part of what the Fraud Forum facilitates, is key to resolving new and innovative fraud problems that crop up as a consequence of evolving methods used by fraudsters. The meeting in Bahrain is an essential element of protecting our customers' interests and our companies' security."
MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain) managers will take part in the 3-day forum alongside over 30 operators from the Association's 210 country members.
The event hosted by MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain) is being held at the Regency Inter-continental Bahrain and is set to look at fraud prevention from a number of different angles. "Training is an essential part of our support to GSM operators, and meetings like this are an essential part of ensuring the lessons learned in our training programmes are getting through to the operators and that they are able to implement new operating policies and adapt their technology as a result," explains Nick Mann, from Vodafone Group.
The meeting will hear from experts on fraud applicable to all GSM uses. GSM technology is not just about mobile phones, it accounts for 75 per cent of the world's digital mobile market and 74 per cent of the world's wireless market.
MTC-Vodafone's (Bahrain) Chief operating Officer Dr. Marwan Alahmadi said the company was committed to supporting the Association's aims:
"Our management team in Bahrain is very keen to fully support the GSM Association's aims and hosting the Fraud Forum in this way is proof of our commitment to this."
"In just over two years of operation in Bahrain we have seen huge developments in technology and capability. It has given our customers an unrivalled service; but due to the success of GSM it is inevitable that criminals are taking an interest in this sector, and the only way to stay ahead of them is through the sharing of information and constant cooperation," he said.
Founded in 1987, the GSM Association has played a pivotal role in the development of the GSM platform and of the global wireless industry, and the prevention of its abuse.
The forum will hear about payment card fraud prevention and will tackle thorny issues such as identity theft, where criminals use personal information to access accounts and defraud both operators and their customers.
