The roundtable discussion was organized as a follow-up to the agreement that the DED signed with the institute late last year. The tie-up between the two institutions is a result of the vision of HH Shaikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance and Industry, and Patron of Al Maktoum Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies.

Professor Abd Al-Fattah El Awaisi, Principal and Vice Chancellor of Al Maktoum Institute, presented the institute' s new agenda to Mr. Ali Ibrahim, Deputy Director General for Executive Affairs, and Mr. Khalid Al Kassim, Deputy Director General for Planning and Development at DED in the presence of several other directors and senior executives from the Department.

"The DED's partnership with Al Maktoum Institute is in keeping with its objective to establish the Department as a hub of economic information, "said Khalid Al Kassim. "The agreement seeks to develop a more scientific process in line with international best practices, in order to position the DED as a repository of information," he added.

Prof. El Awaisi said: "Al Maktoum institute has signed an agreement with the Department in 2005 to establish the framework of developing the relation between the two entities. We are seeking to identify the areas of cooperation to further enhance the relation between Dubai and Scotland as part of Shaikh Hamdan's vision."

Professor El Awaisi added, "Al Maktoum Institute has chosen DED as a strategic partner due to its effective role in driving the economy of Dubai and its part in setting a knowledge-based strategy for Dubai. We are working with several departments in the UAE and the region, but the agreement with the DED is the first official MoU with a government department."

The agreement signed between the two parties include identifying the areas of cooperation which are needed such as training workshops, joint studies and research projects and field visits for DED employees to Scotland and gathering information for setting a Scottish House in Dubai as part of the mutual benefit between the two bodies.

About Al Maktoum Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies

The Institute was born after years of work undertaken by the Islamic Research Academy (ISRA). In 1999, a delegation from ISRA chaired by Lord Watson of Inver Gowrie (MSP) visited Dubai at the invitation of H.H. Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and the Minister of Finance and Industry of the United Arab Emirates. At the meeting, His Highness Shaikh Hamdan generously offered to fund several postgraduate scholarships in Islamic Jerusalem Studies each year, to be administered by ISRA.

In 1999, the Management Committee of ISRA began the process of establishing a Centre for Islamic Jerusalem Studies. On 27 August 2000, ISRA decided to widen the scope of the project and to establish an Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies. H.H. Shaikh Hamdan has once again demonstrated his extraordinary generosity in recognising the work and achievements of ISRA by offering to fully sponsor the establishment of the Institute in Scotland. This understanding was made official by the signing of a Joint Agreement between ISRA and Al-Maktoum Foundation of Dubai, with regard to the establishment of Al-Maktoum Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies during the Fourth ISRA's International Academic Conference on 24 October 2000 at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London.

In recognition of the support and generosity of His Highness Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum who has been, and still is, a strong and devoted champion of this new and exciting academic endeavour, it was decided to name the Institute "Al-Maktoum Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies."
