Jewelled milestones
Uttered anywhere in the world, the name Tiffany evokes a hush of awe and reverence. It's not for anything that it summons this response, as its history is studded with dazzling milestones that bear a striking resemblance to it famous jewellery creations. Established on September 18th 1837 with entrepreneurial talents and aesthetic vision of Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young, Tiffany's pioneering designs immediately won attention and appreciation. Its fearless approach soon became the hallmark of the company, presenting exquisite renditions first in silver hollowware and flatware and later in jewellery.
International recognition soon came their way at the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle, when Tiffany was awarded the grand prize for silver craftsmanship. It was the first American company to employ the 925/100 standard of silver purity, a ratio that was adopted by the United States Congress as the American sterling silver standard in 1851. In 1877, the legendary Tiffany yellow diamond with 90 facets, as against 58, became an exemplar of Tiffany craftsmanship and led to the Tiffany tradition of cutting diamonds for brilliance rather than size. Tiffany's jewellery designers like Jean Schlumberger, Paloma Picasso and Elsa Peretti are acknowledged as being in an exclusive league of their own.
An innate adaptability
Tiffany's standing speaks of its ability, to not only move with the times but also give back to the industry. In the year 2000, which was also Elsa Peretti's 25th anniversary with the company, Tiffany established the Elsa Peretti Professorship in Jewellery Design, at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
The famous Tiffany Setting, introduced in 1886 is one of the most popular engagement ring styles in the world, in which a diamond is set away from the band and held in place by six platinum prongs, allowing a more complete return of light from the stone for maximum brilliance.
Tiffany's patented Lucida diamond cut and setting for engagement rings is a modern masterpiece of grace and precision. Its founder, Charles Tiffany, would indeed be pleased with Tiffany today. For the company has more than one hundred Tiffany & Co. stores and boutiques in seventeen countries, with each location replicating the architectural elements of the famed Tiffany store on Fifth Avenue, like the stately granite façade, Atlas clock, rich cherry wood and marble interiors, offering shoppers a unique shopping experience. It's this dedication that has built up a heritage of customer trust and confidence, making Tiffany's the premier source of gifts for all of life's memorable moments, be it in the family, business or even on the sports arena.
