Third International Arabic Calligraphy Exhibition gets underway in Dubai

Art lovers and connoisseurs in Dubai are in for a treat as calligraphers from 18 countries arrive in Dubai to attend the Third International Arabic Calligraphy exhibition being organized by the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM).

The DTCM, as part of its mission to preserve and promote Dubai's art, culture and heritage, is organizing the dedicated Arabic calligraphy exhibition between February 25 and March 1, 2006.

On show will be more than 120 works by 38 calligraphers at the Al Bustan Rotana Hotel in Dubai, the venue of the exhibition.

Building on the success of the previous editions, this is the third consecutive year that the DTCM is organizing the calligraphy exhibition.

Addressing a Press conference at the Al Bustan Rotana Hotel today, Mr. Marwan bin Beyat, DTCM Manager Events and General Supervisor of the exhibition, said: 'It is a great pleasure and privilege for us to be able to organize an event that highlight a traditional form of art in the Arab and Islamic world. Such exhibitions not only uphold Dubai's heritage and culture but also promote the art form of Arabic calligraphy.'

Also present were Mr. Ibrahim Al Hashemi, Director of Emaar in Syria, the main sponsor of the event, and Mr. Mohammed Al Tamimi, International Supervisor of the exhibition.

In the last two years, the International Arabic Calligraphy Exhibition was organised by the DTCM in association with the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture of Istanbul (IRCICA).

The participants of the exhibition have been drawn from different countries, including Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Jordan, Turkey, Iran, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Bosnia Bangladesh, Libya, Algeria, Japan, Oman, Lebanon and the UAE.

Eight countries are participating for the first time, including Morocco, Tunisia, Bangladesh, Libya, Algeria, Japan, Oman and Bosnia.

An estimated 5,000 visitors are expected to visit the exhibition. A series of lectures and workshops will be organized parallel to the exhibition.

The exhibition will remain open to visitors daily between 5 pm-10 p.m.
