Largest waste management plant in Middle East commences operations

The first phase of Tadweer, the region's largest Material Recovery Facility, was officially inaugurated for operation Wednesday (1 March 2006) by Mr. Hussain Lootah, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality.
Tadweer, the region's first fully automated solid waste sorting and recycling unit, begins its operations with the first of three scheduled lines, located at Warsan. The other two lines will be operational by year end and will address the needs of other areas of Dubai.
Mr. Lootah declared that the sorting Line of Warsan is targeting the proper and safe treatment of general waste and its recycling seeking its benefits in other fields, outlining that the project resembles the effective collaboration between the private and public sector.
Mr. Lootah added that Dubai Municipality targets the utilization of available resources to achieve the optimum results with minimum cost, confirming the commitment of Dubai Municipality of the utmost Environmental standards maintaining the protection of community and high standards of living in a healthy environment.
The Implementation of this project is a record marking the policy of Dubai towards environment's protection and pollution prevention. The Project is an accomplishment for the efforts of Dubai Municipality in planning the strategies, maintaining the environmental laws and the application of effective measures to confine the environmental pollution strengthening the leading role Dubai plays in the environmental regional field.
Felicitating Tadweer in the inauguration, Mr. Hamdan El Shaer - Director of Environment Department in Dubai Municipality expressed his delight for the launching of Tadweer first sorting line, outlining that Dubai Municipality extends their utmost support to Tadweer in this project, noting that both parties are negotiating the plan for increasing the amount of waste treated by Tadweer especially that the priority in this Sector goes to the later. Mr. El Shaeer stated that: "in view of the strategic partnership existing between Dubai Municipality and Tadweer, Dubai Municipality is confining the expansion of current activities undertaken by existing companies as per current status-co, through not granting the release of new licenses in this field."
Outlining the magnitude of the investment in the project, Mr. Khalid Kitmitto, CEO, Tadweer said:" At approximately Dhs 500 million, Tadweer is one of the biggest investment projects in the region and is a unique one for Dubai. The Dubai Municipality's support clearly reflects the government's endorsement and commitment to maintaining a healthy environment. We are actively involved in cooperating with Dubai Municipality with establishing solutions for waste material that goes back to the landfill and are also working collaboratively on ways to address the problem of illegal waste collections by others."
Commenting on the launch of Tadweer's first line, Mr. Ashraf Ayyad, Board Member & Technical Manager, Tadweer, said: "This project has come to fruition after an intense study of the specific needs and requirements of this market. We are particularly proud of its state of the art fully automated technology, which is the latest to be used anywhere in the world. In fact, parts of the line machines have been custom designed for our line."
Tadweer's vision goes beyond the commercial, with a view to increasing awareness of waste reduction, recycling and resource conservation issues, through educational partnerships and industry leadership. Plans in the pipeline, following the launch, include the initiation of full scale operations later in the year, in addition to new services, regional expansion and increasing community participation through fun and thought provoking campaigns and promotions.
