GPSSA participates in the 10th Annual Regional Conference of Retirement and Social Insurance Authorities

A delegation from the UAE General Pension and Social Security Authority (GPSSA) headed by Abdul Rahman Ali Youssef Al Baker, Deputy Director General of GPSSA participated recently in the 10th Annual Regional Retirement and Social Insurance Conference in Bahrain held between the 14th and 15th of March, 2006.
The conference organised in association with the Muhanna Foundation and the Government Actuary Department, covered topics related to retirement schemes and pension funding plans.
"The core of the conference highlights the vital role of the pension sector especially that this sector generates billions of dollars of investments which has a positive and negative impact on the state national economy according to the abided financial policy," said Mr. Al Baker.
Mr. Al Baker added that GPSSA aims at giving attendees the opportunity to share and update their experiences and knowledge on recent developments as well as learn from what they have implemented in the UAE.
Al Baker also explained that issuing regulations for pension funds and social security is an important issue that should be tackled and governments should take quick action to deal with this issue.
Mr. Al Baker expressed his relief for the attendance and participation of specialists in pensions, social security and actuary sector in the conference to share experiences, "The presence of experts ensures that all attendees will have access to benefit from gaining the appropriate knowledge and get exposed to leading-edge thinkers from around the world", added Mr. Al Baker.
More than 150 participants, representing 70 pension and social security funds from the public and private sectors from 28 countries, participated in the 10th Annual Regional Retirement and Social Insurance Conference. International experts and actuaries representing the international association of actuaries and the British government Actuaries Department also took part in the conference, as well as experts from Muhanna Company for actuary research, University of Michigan director of actuary programme, and head of the international organization for social security.

About the General Pensions and Social Security Authority (GPSSA):
The GPSSA was set up by the Federal Decree No. 7 of 1999 under a law issued for wages and social insurance. Its aim is to provide insurance for the protection of the national labour force and to create financial security for citizens. The institution will ultimately be self-funded, will operate as an independent, efficient corporate and offset the financial burden to the UAE Government.
