  • PRESS RELEASE

Western Digital (WD), a leading worldwide hard disk drive manufacturer, has launched its range of state-of-the-art hard drives in Pakistan, in keeping with the company's strategy to increase focus on the fast-growing IT market in the South Asian country.

WD recently introduced hard drives for a multitude of applications, including servers, high-performance gaming PCs, portable uses, home and small business networks and notebook PCs in Pakistan. These products include WD Raptor, WD Raptor X, WD Passport, WD NetCenter and WD Scorpio. WD held alongside a seminar that addressed in detail the existing portfolio of WD products in Pakistan.

"The launch of WD's state-of-the-art hard drives is in line with our plan to expand in Pakistan," said Hafeez Khawaja, WD's Senior Regional Director, Middle East, Africa and South Asia. "WD was quick to recognize the potential of the Pakistan IT market, which has been growing at an annual rate of 25-30 per cent."

"WD has been growing its presence in Pakistan and has received excellent market response to products launched earlier. WD is now widening its product base further to take advantage of the IT boom in the country. Pakistan is an important strategic market for WD, and we are looking to gain a strong foothold in the local market by stepping up our operations in the country," Khawaja added.

The Pakistan Government is investing heavily in IT with the goal of transforming the country into a service-based economy and a software and outsourcing hub. Market estimates have shown Pakistan's IT market to be growing at an amazing 30 per cent. There has been a marked upsurge in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into the country's IT, telecommunication and oil & gas sectors. Pakistan also boasts of a stable stock market and a vibrant banking sector.

WD Raptor X is the world's first manufacturer-produced clear-top hard drive. The 150 GB capacity hard drives were introduced following the widespread popularity of the original enterprise-class WD Raptor among performance enthusiasts. WD Raptor X is designed to achieve the high performance levels of WD Raptor drives, and display a radically progressive style for PC and Mac owners who modify or enhance their computing systems, thrive on high-performance gaming or otherwise demand the most extreme components available.

The award-winning WD Passport Portable USB drives are designed to serve as a digital file briefcase by enabling users to add instant extra storage, and are offered in capacities of 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120 GB. The 5,400 RPM next-generation WD Scorpio mobile hard drives, on the other hand, are equipped with either EIDE or SATA interfaces and operates with power requirements comparable to 4,200 RPM drives to yield lower power consumption for longer system battery life and increased long-term drive reliability.

The WD Essential NetCenter network hard drives are ideal for small office and home users. NetCenter drives are designed to facilitate easy sharing and saving of digital picture, video and music files across small office and home networks using a wired or wireless router. The 7200 RPM drive uses Common Internet File System for platform-independent file sharing.
