Fight against thalassaemia
The Middle East suffers extremely high rates of the deadly genetic disease thalassaemia, particularly in areas of high consanguinity, according to Dr Mariam Matar, Head of Research, UAE Department of Health. The UAE is trying to raise awareness about the incurable condition, by widespread testing and counselling couples that carry the gene.
