Founders of DHFRM hail success of first symposium

The founding members of Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research (DHFMR) praised the success achieved by the foundation's first symposium

It recently concluded its activities in Dubai with the presence of His Excellency Humaid Mohammad Obaid Al Qutami, the UAE Minister of Health, as well as by leading academics, high ranking government officials including Dr. Hanif Hassan, UAE Minister of Education as well as renowned healthcare professionals from around the world.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE, Ruler of Dubai, met with Lawrence Summers, President of Harvard University and a delegation from Harvard Medical School, in the presence of the founding members of the foundation. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed's vision, his emphasis on medical research, and his support for the latest advancements in all fields have been instrumental in the success of the foundation.

It must be noted that the DHFMR was launched following a successful donation campaign that will provide funding to the research initiatives of the foundation. The donors included His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Prince Al Waleed bin Talal, Ali Al-Shehri, Abdul Rahman Falaknaz, Sheikh Suhail Salim Bahwan, Abdel Raheem Zarouni and Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair. The total number of the donations to set up the foundation has reached Dhs 180 million.

The scientific symposium, entitled "Today's Science, Tomorrow's Cures," brought together leading researchers and scientists from all over the world to discuss recent and future advances across a range of medical disciplines, from medical research to clinical care, with special emphasis on the latest advancements in cancer and diabetes research. Scientists at the symposium also presented recent research on cardiology, discussing the latest advancements in open heart surgery whereby the latest technology can detect cardiovascular problems without surgical intervention.

Saeed Al Muntafiq, CEO of Tatweer and a principal figure in the Harvard-Dubai partnership, said, "Healthcare research is at the heart of every advanced world-class health care system. Scientific research had been at the heart of our Arab world for many years, but recently it has virtually ceased to exist. Hence, the need to create this Foundation to develop and encourage scientific research of a world standard."
