The donation is in line with the bank's policy of assisting in the development of distressed or deprived communities.

"This donation comes out of our annual budget earmarked for charitable donations and the Red Crescent was chosen as beneficiary for the exemplary work it conducts throughout a vast geographical area taking in the entire Middle East, the CIS and Sub-continent," explained Andre Sayegh, Acting Chief Executive, First Gulf Bank.

"The money will be used at the discretion of the Red Crescent in which we total faith and for which we have the utmost admiration."

Sayegh handed over a cheque for Dhs 5 million to Red Crescent representative Mohammed Ibrahim Al Hammadi who commented: "The society's work worldwide is entirely dependent upon charitable organisations and First Gulf Bank, as a highly profitable institution, has clearly demonstrated its willingness to share its good fortune with others - an example of corporate good will which we hope many others will follow."
