DM joins Earth Day celebrations

Dubai Municipality joined the rest of the world in observing the Earth Day 2006 on Saturday with wide ranging activities.

The day observed with the slogan "Climate Change Solutions" witnessed a clean up drive at the Jebel Ali Natural Sanctuary organized by the Marine Environment and Sanctuaries Unit in the Environment Department of Dubai Municipality.

The clean up activity conducted from 9am to 1pm was participated by a large number of volunteers and was aimed at protecting the natural environment, enhancing the environmental awareness about the importance of natural sanctuaries and their local environmental aspects.

Also as part of the activities of the Earth Day 2006, leaflets were distributed to the public as well as the employees of the Municipality. The Earth Day 2006 activities will last until 29th April.

On Sunday, a contest called "Be creative with the Earth" for Dubai Municipality employees will be organized in order to familiarize them with environmental occasions and encourage them for creative accomplishments in the field of environment.

On 27th April an "Environmental Marathon" will be organized for the children of Dubai Municipality employees by the Environment and Health Awareness Office in the Municipality with the cooperation of Public Libraries Section.

The event, to be participated by students of elementary schools, will be held at 9am at Rashidiya and Safa public libraries. It is aimed at increasing environmental awareness among students and familiarizing them with the local environment and natural life of the UAE.

Also as part of the Earth Day 2006, a lecture and a workshop titled "Distinguished Planet" will be organized at the Municipality Staff Club from 9am to 1pm on 29th April.

The event, conducted by the Environment and Health Awareness Office in the Municipality with the cooperation of Al Raya Secondary School for secondary school girls, is aimed at increasing awareness among the students on environmental issues and encouraging them to find out suitable solutions for them.
