The IBM System p announcement line up included the System p5 510 Express, p5 520 Express, p5 550 Express, p5 185 Express, p5 570, and the p5 575. The System p brings IBM's heritage of mainframe and midrange computing technology together with its expertise in UNIX, offering a unique and powerful solution for web, database services and technical computing. "Saudi businesses are calling for technologies that will enable them to run web and database services now, as well as be able to scale in the future," stated Ray Hebert, IBM System p I/O & Peripherals Manager.
The System p is a broad product line that ranges from powerful workstations (ideal for mechanical design) to mission-critical symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) servers for solutions such as ERP, CRM, transaction processing and web serving. "The p in System p stands for performance; we're dedicated to not only ensure that our machines are the fastest in the world, but also to point out that the p570 and p595 models' transaction processing capabilities are twice as fast as any other machine. So, we are very much focused on maximizing the benefit of every processor and resource that goes into every one of our systems" added Hebert.
International speakers and regional experts also shared details on the new IBM systems that combine high-end functions with the ease-of-use characteristics of a PC. "Saudi businesses need supplementary intelligence into their storage subsequence; therefore, we see the need for more virtualized storage usability", clarified Marius Lohr, IBM Team leader Customer Solutions at IBM TotalStorage Interoperability Center in Mainz, Germany.
The IBM TotalStorage range includes the massively scaleable DS8000, which provides clients with "Virtual Storage Systems", DS 6000, which offers a new standard in pricing and packaging for enterprise-class functionality, as well as the DS 4000 series for technical leadership and midrange arrays. These systems are the result of a large-scale, multi-year research and development effort at IBM, leveraging billions of dollars in server and storage innovations to drive new economics and customer choices.
IBM System p and IBM TotalStorage benefit from each other by combining technologies, enabling IBM to provide systems with minimized risks of failure and data loss.
"The Saudi market is very important to IBM; we see it maturing and going through a growth phase, which we expect will continue in the future, as Saudi companies are continuing to expand into the global economy"
said Hebert and Lohr. "With our capabilities, IBM is clearly in the best position to facilitate these transitions," they added.
