The grant will be used to provide Citigroup Scholarships to 10 needy and deserving students ($2,000/student) pursuing bachelor degrees at LAU's School of Business.

"We are proud to be associated with such a prestigious international organization; we applaud Citigroup's willingness to help the Lebanese community through financing the education of students whose only restriction to obtaining qualifications is financial," said LAU's President, Dr. Joseph Jabra. "This donation will enhance the offerings that LAU's financial aid program presents to our students and will give them the opportunity to obtain a quality education with international standards," he added.

Walter Siouffi, Citigroup Country Officer in Lebanon, said:

"Our support for the LAU scholarship program underscores Citigroup's commitment to supporting financial education in Lebanon in order to help achieve the national goal of educating local professionals, mainly in business disciplines. We are proud to be associated with LAU and look forward to partnering with the university in other strategic initiatives."

Citigroup's presence in Lebanon dates back to the 1950s. Since re-establishing its fully licensed branch in Beirut over ten years ago, the Bank has evolved into an active corporate citizen, with a particular interest in supporting financial literacy and education.

Recently, Citigroup and the Citigroup Foundation announced a 10-year, $200 million global financial education commitment, the formation of a new Office of Financial Education and a global initiative designed to encourage its 300,000 employees around the world to devote time to support financial education and other charitable causes. Under the new initiative, employees may take a day off from work to volunteer for non-profit organizations in their communities.

About Lebanese American University

Lebanese American University is one of the leading academic institutions in Lebanon. In 1924, a group of missionaries from the Presbyterian Church of the United States started the first Women's College in the region. This Women's College was started in Lebanon and called the Junior College for Women. The small College continued, thrived, and grew through the years until in 1995, the Lebanese American University emerged as a full fledged multi-campus university. Currently, LAU serves 6,294 students in its 8 Schools.

In August of 2004, Dr. Joseph Jabbra was called to serve as the new President of the institution and assertively articulated the University's vision to: (1) promote and inculcate academic excellence throughout the institution; (2) ensure a student-centered University that prides itself in the formation of leaders for the future; (3) promote the dignity of and respect for faculty, staff and students in word and deed; (4) celebrate the many contributions of the alumnae/alumni of the institution; (5) establish a "one University" culture while recognizing the distinct gifts and attributes of the different campuses; and (6) achieve accreditation through the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

LAU strives, in all its endeavors, to fulfill its mission in being committed to academic excellence, student-centeredness, the advancement of scholarship, the education of the whole person, and the formation of students as future leaders in a diverse world.
